A driver was clocked careening down the road at 107 mph in a 45 mph zone near Florida’s Port Canaveral told deputies he was “celebrating”. At least, that’s the story he told the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. He had been driving a white Lamborghini at the time, CBS12 reported. Deputies pulled him over on a state highway.
Deputy Schulze was running radar enforcement when he spotted the Lamborghini moving at a high rate of speed, authorities said. The car was clocked driving at that speed on State Road 528. The deputy then made the decision to initiate a traffic stop in an attempt to figure out what was going on.
The driver pulled over without incident, and police were able to identify him as Corey Weedman. He didn’t try to resist or flee, according to deputies. He even offered up an explanation when he discussed his actions with the officers.
Investigators said Weedman told deputies he’d rented the Lamborghini for a big night out he’d already planned ahead of time. He described the drive as part of his celebration, though it ended up getting a bit out of hand. He had picked the rental up just for the occasion, to be able to drive an exotic car.
The Dangerous Speed
Deputies said the encounter could have ended in a much different way if the driver hadn’t decided to pull over. Going 107 mph in a 45 mph zone, the car was moving at more than twice the posted limit. The traffic stop was able to conclude without incident that way. Of course, things don’t always end in such a tidy fashion when it comes to speeding or other types of potentially dangerous driving.
In Florida, driving at extreme speeds can equate to charges of reckless driving. That means offenders can be given a criminal charge instead of just a ticket. The sheriff’s office didn’t clarify whether Weedman was cited or charged in this case. Still, a reading that high goes far beyond the point at which fines and license points start to accumulate.
The Bigger Safety Message
Officials used the stop to remind visitors to their page excessive speed on public roads. They wanted to get across the point that reckless driving does indeed put everyone at risk. State Road 528, known as the Beachline, is a major highway that runs between Orlando and the coast near Port Canaveral.
For now, however, this driver got to spend the night making sure they were reminded of the danger these speeds can cause instead of having a big celebration. They’ll likely remember exactly why they can’t go zooming out through the night the next time they rent such a car.
