A Georgia criminal defense attorney is facing criminal charges more than a month after a road rage confrontation in Kennesaw was caught on video and shared widely online.
In decades past, the incident might have ended as little more than an embarrassing traffic dispute and a brief mention in a local police report. Instead, it became a reminder that smartphones, dashcams, surveillance cameras, and social media have fundamentally changed the consequences of public behavior. A few moments at a red light turned into a viral video, a public identification effort, statewide media coverage, and eventually criminal charges.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Richard Craven, 46, of Acworth, was booked into the Cobb County Jail after community tips helped Kennesaw police identify him as the man seen striking the driver’s side door and window of another vehicle during a confrontation in downtown Kennesaw.
The confrontation happened on May 7 near the intersection of North Main Street and Jiles Road, but the driver remained unidentified until police released the footage and asked the public for help. According to WSB-TV, a passenger in the van said they were traveling at the posted 25 mph speed limit when the driver behind them became frustrated, pulled into a turn lane, and then got caught at a red light.
Video Shows Driver Confrontation
Please give the video a moment to load.
The video appears to show a man exit his vehicle, walk up to a van stopped at a red light, and repeatedly strike the driver’s door and window while the occupants remain inside. The confrontation unfolds in broad daylight while traffic waits nearby.
According to WSB-TV, a passenger in the van said the driver became angry after getting caught at a red light following an attempt to pass. The passenger also claimed the driver folded up his paper tag before approaching the vehicle, making it more difficult to identify the car afterward.
That detail may have complicated the investigation, but it didn’t stop the video from spreading online. Once police released the footage, it quickly made the rounds on Facebook and generated hundreds of comments.
Facebook Users Couldn’t Believe What They Were Watching
When Kennesaw police first shared the video in May, the footage quickly spread across social media and sparked a surprisingly lively discussion.
While some commenters debated what might have happened before the video began, many focused on the driver’s decision to get out and approach a vehicle occupied by several people. Numerous commenters described the move as reckless, noting that such confrontations can escalate quickly and unpredictably.
Others pointed out that you never really know who is inside another vehicle or how they might react. Several commenters noted that road rage incidents tend to spiral far beyond whatever minor traffic disagreement started them.
Facebook being Facebook, the jokes were never far behind. Commenters compared the driver to everything from an angry elf to a garden gnome, while others joked that the confrontation looked like the sort of thing that happens when someone takes a red light far too personally.
One thing both critics and comedians seemed to agree on was that the reaction felt wildly disproportionate to whatever happened beforehand. Many commenters expressed disbelief that a routine traffic encounter could escalate into a confrontation that ultimately led to a viral video, a public identification effort, and criminal charges.
For a delay measured in seconds rather than minutes, that’s a lot of fallout.
