A Florida police officer was placed on leave after allegedly causing a multiple-vehicle crash while drunk. He is also accused of engaging in a physical confrontation with local deputies after he was transported to a local emergency room.

As reported by CBS12, citing probable cause affidavits, the incident occurred on Friday, June 5. At around 11:35 p.m., Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBCSO) deputies responded to an intersection collision at SW 18th Street and Carolwood in Boca Raton.

Upon arrival, deputies came across a white 2026 Toyota Tacoma and a black 2025 Honda Prologue. Both were in the middle of the roadway, heavily damaged.

Some witnesses provided sworn statements detailing what had occurred. According to them, the Toyota was to blame.

Multi-Vehicle Crash, Driver Identified

According to witnesses, the Toyota had activated its right turn signal, ready to enter a house development. However, despite the signal, the car allegedly turned left, directly in front of the Honda’s path.

As a result, the Honda struck the Toyota, disabling both vehicles due to the severe damage. Allegedly, as per the Honda’s occupants, the Toyota driver was slurring his words, appearing to be drunk.

The Toyota driver, as per the PBCSO, was identified as 42-year-old Tomothy Joseph Walsh. At the time of the crash, he was an active West Palm Beach police officer.

Hospitalization, Fight Breaks Out

Walsh was transported to West Boca Medical Center to receive treatment. Around midnight, inside the emergency room, a situation erupted.

A dispute between Walsh and a PBCSO deputy erupted as they were waiting for a specialized DUI investigator. As per the authorities, this occurred as a result of an argument revolving around keeping Walsh under constant watch and hospital visitation.

Eventually, things escalated further when Walsh allegedly shoved the deputy and used his frame to lunge forward. Multiple hospital staff members and deputies managed to restrain Walsh and handcuffed him.

On Leave, Department Statement

Tomothy Joseph Walsh is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, driving under the influence and causing property damage, and assault on specified personnel. Following his arrest, the West Palm Beach Department shared a statement, announcing that Walsh had been placed on administrative leave.

“The West Palm Beach Police Department holds all employees to the highest standards of professionalism and conduct,” the statement read, as per CBS12. “This conduct is inconsistent with those standards. As a result, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.”

Reportedly, Walsh had been involved in a DUI case back in 2018. Allegedly, he struck a tree while driving under the influence. Prosecutors chose not to pursue criminal charges.
