In a scene straight out of The Italian Job, a car in LA County lost control and slid across a mountain road, finally coming to a stop with its tail end hanging precariously over the edge of a sheer drop. The driver and passengers in the car were left to tentatively extract themselves from the perilously perched vehicle.
The incident happened just after 5 p.m. on Mt. Baldy Road, on the way up to the nearby ski resort. Two cars collided on the narrow mountain roadway, resulting in one coming hair-raisingly close to tumbling off the edge and down the mountainside.
Emergency services responded, and one person was taken to a nearby hospital. CBS reported that there were a number of injuries in the mountain road crash.
Aerial footage from the scene shows the two cars involved in the collision spread across the road, with one still teetering on the edge of the drop. Only the short stone wall has stopped it from plunging to the valley below.
Rescue Operation
Once the injured occupants of the two cars involved in the Mt Baldy road incident were taken care of, it was up to the emergency services and rescue team to clear the debris. The footage showed the wreckage of both cars strewn across the road, with one car far too close to tumbling from the edge.
A Lucky Escape
The narrow winding road of Mt Baldy has a history of claiming victims who lose control on their way to and from the local ski resort. In the past, some have been less lucky, falling prey to the steep slopes and often very minimal barriers along the road.
In 2024, a woman driving up the route leading to Mt Baldy lost control of her truck and tumbled over the side and down into the canyon below. In an attempt to swerve a deer, she had put her own life on the line. CNN reports that she spent 4 nights trapped in her mangled truck, unable to call for rescue due to a lack of cell service, and her broken ankle rendering her unable to hike for help.
She managed to survive by eating the snacks in her car, somehow weathering the blistering cold of the mountain canyon. Her truck couldn’t be seen from the road, and it was only by chance that she was rescued. A fisherman, looking for somewhere to cast his line, heard her faint cries.
Upon investigation, he found her, weak, cold, and hungry, at the bottom of the canyon.
