A Houston family’s effort to recover a stolen truck turned tragic on the afternoon of June 6 after two people were shot while attempting to confront suspected thieves, leaving one man dead and another injured.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began shortly after 2 pm when an armed suspect carjacked a man at a gas station near Tidwell Road and John Ralston Road in north Houston. However, investigators noted that the vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracking device, allowing the owner to monitor its location after it was taken.

After the truck was stolen, authorities said the owner contacted his 50-year-old father for help locating it. A 24-year-old friend also joined the search as the group attempted to track down the vehicle themselves.

Investigators said the father eventually located the stolen truck near Airline Drive and the North Loop. At some point during the encounter, authorities said the father intentionally crashed into the vehicle before he and the younger man began chasing after the suspects on foot. What happened next quickly turned violent.

Deputies said both men were shot near a gas station while pursuing the suspects. Emergency crews responded to the area, where chaos reportedly unfolded in the aftermath of the gunfire.

The 24-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the back but survived and is said he is expected to recover from his injuries. The older man, however, was critically wounded and transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the 50-year-old victim. Investigators said detectives are currently questioning several people in connection with the shooting. However, authorities have not confirmed whether any of those individuals are the male and female suspects believed to have been involved in the carjacking and subsequent violence.

What Happened After?

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue working to determine exactly what led up to the fatal shooting. Residents in the area described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene after multiple gunshots rang out.

A nearby witness was able to record a majority of the incident leading up to the incident itself. You can see the blue truck after it had collided with the silver SUV, as well as the suspect opening up the door to a different nearby truck.

Nearby resident Morgan Parsons said she initially heard gunfire before stepping outside to see what had happened. He shared with KHOU11: “There was a body on the ground, and it was just panic. A lot of people involved, a lot of screaming and crying. Intense is all I could say. It’s just heartbreaking and weighs you down.”

Authorities are continuing to review evidence in the case, including potential surveillance footage from nearby businesses that may help investigators identify those responsible.
