A teenager in Lawrence, Kansas, will face multiple charges after allegedly ramming his vehicle into a patrol car, head-on. As per the police, this occurred shortly after the teen fought with his father, and the patrol car was the third in a series of collisions in his neighborhood.
According to a post from the Lawrence Kansas Police Department, the incident occurred on Friday, May 29. At around 11:30 p.m., an LKPD officer responded to a call at an unspecified location in Lawrence.
Reportedly, neighbors had called 911, reporting a fight between a father and his son. The LKPD said that the father had attempted to stop his son from huffing butane, which is a very dangerous activity.
Storming out of his house, the son, who remains unnamed but is 17 years old, left the house and drove off. Then, he encountered the LKPD officer mentioned above.
Head-on Collision
Footage shared by the LKPD shows the officer’s patrol car approaching the house. Another vehicle, with its headlights on, then approached the patrol car.
The officer, in an attempt to avoid a collision, swerved to the right. However, the vehicle failed to slow down and is shown ramming head-on into the LKPD officer’s patrol car.
The clip then shows the vehicle backing down, before both the LKPD officer and the teenager exit their vehicles. The officer is heard telling the teen to get on the ground, but is met with expletives. After the officer drew his stun gun, the 17-year-old complied.
A Ramming Spree
Following the crash, police officers unveiled more details surrounding the incident. Apparently, after the aforementioned fight, the 17-year-old got in his vehicle and, before driving off, allegedly drove into his father’s parked truck.
Moments later, and before ramming into the patrol car, the teenager also damaged a nearby car, parked on the street, the LKPD said. The police provided no footage of either car.
The 17-year-old was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital shortly after the collision. Then, he was moved to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Teen Faces Charges
The teenager is facing charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. If convicted, he could face time at a juvenile correctional facility, given his age.
If he is prosecuted as an adult, though, he could spend years behind bars. He could spend anywhere from over 3 years up to 14 years in prison.
Meanwhile, the patrol car involved in the collision had to be towed away due to the sustained damage. Fortunately, the officer, while shaken, wasn’t injured and continued working after the collision.
