Wrong-Way Driver Killed in 100-mph Crash After 16-Mile Pursuit

A wrong-way driver who led law enforcement on a nearly 16-mile pursuit up Florida’s U.S. 1 was killed Sunday evening after his vehicle collided with two other cars in Hobe Sound, ran off the road and caught fire. Four other people in his path were hurt, including two young children. All four are expected to survive.

The driver had been heading north in the southbound lanes at speeds investigators said exceeded 100 mph. Several police cruisers pursued him along the way. They also used stop sticks to deflate the man’s tires, with one giving out on a bridge. At one point, the man attempted to run over an officer.

Authorities still aren’t sure of the man’s identity, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The car was registered to an elderly woman in South Florida. Fingerprints haven’t yet been matched to anyone identifiable so far.

What investigators have laid out about the route, the chase, and the families who happened to be on U.S. 1 at the wrong moment is now part of a broader picture of what wrong-way driving can do. There’s also an important lesson to be learned here about what the rest of us can take from it. Though the man primarily injured himself in the end, this is.a cautionary tale about why this kind of stunt is bad for everyone on the road.

What Happened With the Driver

The incident began just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. The Jupiter Police Department of Florida alerted deputies about a driver heading north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1. With the incident kicking off with a driver going the wrong direction, there was already a bad omen.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent first spotted the vehicle near Broadway Street and U.S. 1 in Riviera Beach, tried to stop it, and notified Juno Beach and Jupiter police as the pursuit moved north. In all, the suspect drove nearly 16 miles in the wrong direction, with Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek saying speeds were well over 100 mph.

How the Incident Ended

Jupiter Police deflated one of the vehicle’s tires using stop sticks as it crossed a bridge. The driver tried to run over a Jupiter officer in the process and continued north. The officer was not injured during the confrontation.

The chase ended in Hobe Sound when the suspect crashed into two other cars. He then veered off the road near U.S. 1 and Jonathan Dickinson State Park, when the vehicle burst into flames. The driver was ejected shortly afterward. First responders performed CPR on the scene before he was pronounced dead.

A 6-year-old child suffered internal injuries that necessitated an airlift to St. Mary’s Medical Center. A 4-year-old was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Two adults were also injured in the chaos. All four are expected to survive.

The driver has not been identified. The vehicle’s plate was registered to an elderly South Florida woman, but fingerprint analysis has not produced a match, the sheriff’s office said. The investigation is ongoing.

What We Can Learn From This

There are a few takeaways for everyday drivers from this story. For one, never drive in the opposite direction. And never try to take matters into your own hands should you find yourself dealing with someone who’s doing this kind of thing. There won’t be a good ending for anyone involved.

Wrong-way crashes are only a small part of vehicular accidents. However, they do represent a disproportionate amount of fatal ones. With the closing speed of two vehicles meeting head-on, there’s usually little time to react. That’s why you should adopt habits like scanning the road ahead, driving in the right lane on divided highways when traffic allows, and keeping your headlights on at dusk and at night.

If a wrong-way driver appears, slow down, move as far right as safely possible (onto the shoulder if necessary), and call 911. Don’t try to outrun or go around the vehicle. Following these tips could save your life.
