Nissan Unveils A New Frontier Sport Edition With Real Off-Road Attitude

Nissan is giving the Frontier lineup a tougher new look for 2027 with the introduction of the new Sport Edition package. Designed to slot between the SV and the more extreme Pro-4X, the new trim brings a more rugged appearance and useful off-road upgrades without pushing buyers into the highest price brackets.

The timing makes plenty of sense for Nissan. Frontier sales jumped nearly 48 percent during the first quarter of 2026, proving there is still strong demand for midsize pickups even as competition intensifies from rivals like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado.

Instead of completely reinventing the truck, Nissan has focused on refining what already works. The Frontier remains one of the few midsize pickups still powered by a naturally aspirated V6, and the company appears eager to lean into that old-school formula while adding more visual attitude.

For buyers who want something tougher-looking than a standard SV but do not necessarily need the full off-road hardware of a Pro-4X, the new Sport Edition may end up hitting a sweet spot.

The new package starts with the Frontier SV trim and layers on several off-road-inspired upgrades. Nissan fitted the truck with black 17-inch off-road-style wheels wrapped in Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires, along with an aluminum skid plate for added protection underneath.

The exterior also borrows several styling elements from the Pro-X and Pro-4X models. Black trim pieces now cover the grille, mirrors, and lower front fascia, while bedside “Sport” graphics and black tailgate badging help separate the truck from standard Frontier models.

Additional touches include LED fog lights and front accent lighting, giving the midsize pickup a more aggressive look without becoming overly flashy. Nissan seems to have struck a fairly clean balance here between rugged styling and everyday usability.

Nissan Keeps Its Naturally Aspirated V6 Alive

Under the hood, nothing changes for 2027, and that is probably good news for Frontier fans. Every version of the truck continues using Nissan’s naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque.

The engine remains paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and towing capacity stays at a respectable 7,150 pounds. While that falls slightly short of the Chevrolet Colorado’s segment-leading figures, it remains competitive for most midsize truck buyers.

More importantly, the Frontier continues offering something increasingly rare in today’s truck market: straightforward naturally aspirated power without turbochargers, hybrid systems, or complicated electrification. That simplicity has become part of the truck’s appeal.

Nissan also confirmed that the Sport Edition includes Sand, Mud, and Rock driving modes, although it does not receive the Bilstein suspension hardware fitted to Pro-X and Pro-4X models.

Interior Changes Add Some Personality

Inside, Nissan gave the Sport Edition its own distinct personality through a surprisingly bold use of yellow accents. Black upholstery is contrasted by bright yellow stitching across the seats, dashboard, grab handles, doors, and shift lever.

The yellow details may not appeal to everyone, but they do help give the Sport Edition a more youthful and adventurous feel compared to the regular SV trim. The cabin, otherwise, remains familiar Frontier territory, with practical controls and available tech upgrades.

The 2027 Frontier still offers either an eight-inch standard infotainment display or an available 12.3-inch touchscreen. Buyers can also option features, including a 360-degree camera system, remote engine start, and a Fender premium audio system.

Small Updates Keep The Frontier Competitive

Beyond the new Sport Edition, Nissan made only minor adjustments to the rest of the Frontier lineup for 2027. A new Alpine Metallic exterior color joins the palette, while the Pro Convenience package now includes an upgraded Qi2-compatible wireless charging system with magnetic phone alignment and improved cooling.

The rest of the lineup remains largely unchanged, which is understandable given how recently Nissan refreshed the Frontier for 2025. The company appears focused on maintaining momentum rather than making unnecessary changes.

That strategy may prove smart. Frontier demand remains strong, and the truck continues carving out a niche for buyers who still want a midsize pickup that feels durable, mechanical, and relatively uncomplicated. The new Sport Edition simply adds a little more attitude to a formula that already seems to be working.
