Florida Man Falls Asleep at Green Light, Fake Name Backfires When Police Wake Him Up

A Miami man managed to rack up multiple bad decisions in one very early Sunday morning in Wildwood, Florida, and the story only gets better the further you read.

At around 5 a.m., a Wildwood Police officer was dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 301 and State Road 44 after drivers reported something unusual: a car sitting completely still in the middle of the intersection while traffic signals cycled through green, yellow, and red repeatedly. No movement. No honking response. Nothing. Just a car parked where a car absolutely should not be parked.

When the officer arrived and approached the vehicle, the reason for the traffic jam became immediately clear. The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Daniel Truque Valencia of Miami, was fast asleep behind the wheel. His passenger was also sound asleep. Whatever the evening had involved, it had apparently worn both of them out completely.

The officer woke the pair up and asked for the standard trio: license, registration, and insurance. What followed was a decision-making sequence that did not go well for Valencia.

The Fake Name Gamble That Did Not Pay Off

Rather than handing over his actual identification, Valencia provided the officer with a false name and a false date of birth. This is the kind of move that sounds clever in the moment but almost never works out, especially when a trained law enforcement officer is standing right there with access to databases.

The officer was not fooled for long. Through further investigation, Valencia was correctly identified, and once that happened, things got significantly worse. Not only had he been driving with a passenger while unconscious at a major intersection, but his license was also suspended.

What Charges Did He Face?

Valencia was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center, which is located in Bushnell, Florida, and serves the surrounding area including Wildwood. He did not stay there long, posting a $500 bond and being released shortly after.

It is worth noting that driving on a suspended license in Florida is not a minor infraction. Depending on prior history and circumstances, it can carry fines, extended suspension periods, and even jail time. Combine that with the false information provided to an officer, and Valencia’s early morning nap turned into a very costly one.

Why Wildwood and Why That Intersection?

Wildwood is a small city in Sumter County, situated right near the junction of I-75 and the Florida Turnpike, making it a significant travel crossroads for people moving between South Florida and the northern parts of the state. U.S. 301 and State Road 44, where Valencia was found, is one of the more active intersections in the area, particularly for overnight travelers passing through.

It is not uncommon for tired long-distance drivers to push a little too far before pulling over, but falling asleep at a red light, in the middle of an intersection, at 5 in the morning, is a different category of exhaustion entirely. If nothing else, the story is a reminder that drowsy driving is far more dangerous than many people give it credit for.

What We Can Learn From This Particular Sunday Morning

There are actually a few useful takeaways buried inside this story. First and most obviously, if you are tired enough to fall asleep behind the wheel, you are too tired to drive. Pulling over at a gas station, a rest stop, or even a parking lot is always the better call, and Florida has no shortage of options along major routes.

Second, providing false information to law enforcement is rarely the smooth escape it seems like in the moment. Officers have tools and training specifically designed to work through exactly that situation, and the added charge or complication it creates is almost never worth it.

Third, and this one should go without saying, driving on a suspended license puts everyone on the road at risk, including the driver. Licenses get suspended for a reason, and the legal consequences of continuing to drive on one are significant.

Valencia’s early Sunday morning in Wildwood was a lot of things. A good decision, it was not.
