A long-running case of violent road rage in Orlando reached a decisive and emotional conclusion inside the Orange County Courthouse, where a judge handed down a 50-year prison sentence to Nail Abraham for the fatal 2020 shooting of Eric Schetszner.

The sentencing marked the end of a case that began with a moment of anger on a Central Florida highway, but spiraled into irreversible tragedy. According to courtroom accounts, Abraham pursued Schetszner’s vehicle during a road rage confrontation in July 2020.

What followed was a single gunshot that took the life of a man described by loved ones as a devoted nurse and father of three. That single act transformed a fleeting dispute into a years-long legal battle that would deeply affect two families.

The Growing Crisis of Road Rage in America

Road rage remains a serious and growing problem across the United States, and Orlando rank among the most dangerous cities for violent incidents. Nationally, firearm-related road rage cases have surged, and Florida consistently appears near the top of these statistics.

Surveys show 96% of drivers witnessed road rage in the past six months. Between 2014–2021, 218 murders and 12,610 injuries were attributed to road rage. Roughly 37% of aggressive driving incidents involve a gun, making confrontations especially deadly.

About 30 murders per year are linked directly to road rage disputes. Tailgating, obscene gestures, and reckless lane changes are the most common sparks for escalation.

Incidentally, Orlando is consistently listed among the top U.S. cities for aggressive driving, placing third nationally for aggressive holiday drivers and seventh overall.

Florida leads the nation in road rage crashes involving guns, with 277 documented cases since 2014. In Orlando alone, 27 firearm-related road rage cases were reported in 2025.

The July 2020 shooting of Eric Schetszner demonstrates just how quickly a highway dispute can escalate into tragedy.

No longer is road rage just a matter of tempers flying. It has become a national menace and a consequential public safety crisis. Orlando exemplifies the risks of firearm-related confrontations that turn highways into dangerous spaces.

The Sentence and Its Aftermath

Back inside the Orange County courtroom, the atmosphere was heavy with anticipation and emotion. The judge sentenced Abraham to half a century behind bars, with credit for over 2,000 days already served. While the sentence brings a sense of legal closure, the path to that moment was anything but straightforward.

Abraham’s defense team had argued for a significantly lighter sentence, pushing for the 25-year mandatory minimum. Their position was rooted in the belief that the case lacked aggravating circumstances that would justify a harsher penalty.

The defense expressed disappointment following the ruling, maintaining that the minimum sentence would have been sufficient under the law.

Despite that argument, the court sided with the severity of the outcome. Under the terms of the sentence, Abraham is expected to serve 25 years day-for-day, followed by approximately 85 percent of the remaining term. With the defense having already filed a notice of appeal, legal proceedings may continue in higher courts.

For the victim’s family, however, the sentencing represented something far more personal than legal finality. It was a moment of reckoning, a step toward healing after years of grief and uncertainty. In the courtroom, emotions ran high as loved ones reflected on the life that was lost and the future that was forever altered.

A Call for Change on the Road

Schetszner’s partner, Carrie McFersonen, spoke about the broader meaning of the tragedy. Road rage incidents, often fueled by momentary anger, can have permanent and devastating consequences. Her words served as a reminder that no confrontation on the road is worth a life.

Now, her focus shifts to raising their three sons and preserving Schetszner’s memory. It is a future shaped by loss, but also by resilience and the determination to honor a life cut short.

Following the sentencing, Monique Worrell addressed the public. She urged drivers to pause, breathe, and think before reacting in moments of frustration behind the wheel. Her remarks underscored a growing concern about road rage incidents and their potentially deadly outcomes.

This case represents a weighty example of how quickly everyday situations can escalate beyond control. It started as a highway dispute and ended in irreversible loss, a lengthy prison sentence, and a lasting impact on multiple lives.
