He Booked a Jeep Wrangler From Hertz — What Showed Up Was a Cargo Van Built for Moving Furniture

Somewhere out there, a man walked into a Hertz location fully prepared for a little off-road adventure: wind in his hair, Wrangler vibes, the whole thing. What he got instead was a vehicle more suited to helping a buddy move a couch.

A travel creator on TikTok going by @embraeric recently shared a video documenting what can only be described as the automotive equivalent of ordering a steak and getting a bowl of oatmeal. He had reserved a Jeep Wrangler — not just browsed one, mind you, but booked and guaranteed it — only to arrive at the counter and receive the keys to a GMC Savana cargo van. The kind of van that usually has a hand truck rattling around in the back and smells faintly of moving boxes.

His response was remarkably composed. “This is my rental car today, and this is why I don’t rent with Hertz,” he said in the clip, before adding with the energy of a man choosing peace: “It’s just me, and I’m here for a couple of hours, so off to church we go.”

Straight to church. In a cargo van. Amen.

So What Exactly Does “Guaranteed” Mean at a Rental Car Counter?

Here’s where things get philosophically interesting for car people: rental companies like Hertz mostly sell you a category, not a car. You might pick the rugged outdoor SUV option, but that’s basically a suggestion. The actual vehicle depends on what’s sitting on the lot when you show up in person.

Hertz does market itself with the tagline “the choice is yours,” which — let’s be honest — is doing a lot of heavy lifting when the lot is full of cargo vans. The company also offers a “Manager’s Special,” which is essentially the rental world’s mystery box: you’re guaranteed at least an economy car, and you might get upgraded to something larger. Great if you’re flexible. Less great if you’ve been mentally preparing for a Wrangler all week.

The video racked up over 146,000 views, which tells you this hit a nerve. The comments turned into a group therapy session for rental car trauma survivors.

One person said they ordered a 15-passenger van and got offered two minivans with no extra driver. Another invoked the sacred Seinfeld rental car bit — the one where Jerry explains that taking a reservation and holding a reservation are very different skills — and honestly, it’s aged like fine wine.

Not everyone had horror stories, though. Some commenters talked about showing up for a Kia Soul and driving away in a Mercedes SUV, or booking a subcompact and getting handed a brand-new GMC Sierra. The rental car lot is essentially a lottery, and sometimes you win big.

As for where people’s loyalties actually lie, the comments were chaotic and deeply personal, as car opinions tend to be. National and Enterprise earned some vocal defenders. Turo got shouted out by the crowd that’s tired of surprises altogether. Budget took some hits. Alamo got a quiet cosign.

The one thing everyone seemed to agree on: walk up to that counter with zero attachment to what you think you booked, and you’ll have a much better day. Or, apparently, a much better sermon.

  1. We booked a sub-compact car to get higher gas mileage as we were traveling some distance to a funeral, money was too tight, and we wanted that high gas mileage. Yah….. a full size car was waiting for us, AFTER we had called the day before and the morning of, to make sure we had the car we wanted. Of course they assured us it was an upgrade!!!! BS!! I told they were going to pay the difference in the gas or give us a substantial discount.
More BS….they offered a discount on the next rental!!!!! If my dad hadn’t passed us $50 at the funeral we would not have made it, home. Never rented from them again and made sure I have told anyone who would listen about our crappy experience.
