Driving a car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife presents one of the most exciting opportunities in the world, racing around the historic 154 corners of the 12.9-mile circuit.
The winding, twisting, and high-speed German track once hosted Formula 1 races, and today the iconic Nürburgring 24 Hours remains a staple at the pinnacle of the motorsport calendar. For car enthusiasts, there is no better opportunity to drive on roads with such historical significance.
But one man, Leo, had the opportunity to drive around the circuit in completely different circumstances. Due to his rare disease, he completed the lap using a joystick.
Meet Leo
Leo has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. It primarily affects the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, hips, and thighs, which significantly impacts his mobility.
In August 2023, he contacted YouTuber Misha Charoudin, known for his onboard footage from the Green Hell and currently a driver with the BILSTEIN Racing Team, about his ambition to complete a lap of the circuit.
“I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare disease that causes severe muscle loss,” the message read.
“Despite all that, with my restrictions, I have a big dream as a car-guy: Driving a car with a driver’s license!

“The main struggles now are the high costs of €80,000 to convert the car with the Space Drive system so I can drive it… But it’s the only way I can drive!”
The Vehicle and Lap in Question
To make the lap possible, Leo and Charoudin carried out a series of modifications and prepared to tackle the circuit in a specially adapted Volkswagen T6 van. Leo operated the vehicle using a sophisticated joystick system, steering with it and pushing or pulling it forward and backward to control acceleration and braking.

Both took to the track in mixed conditions, with the surface damp and darkness closing in by the minute. Though no official lap time was recorded, it does not diminish what Leo achieved that day. Against the backdrop of one of the most demanding and unforgiving circuits in the world, he demonstrated immense courage, resilience, and determination.
The weather would have intensified the challenge, bringing reduced visibility and even more demanding handling, especially when judging braking distances on a damp surface. Yet by completing the lap, Leo did far more than simply navigate a legendary track. His inspiring triumph was a powerful display of courage and resilience.
Leo Speaks Out on His Experience
Leo later shared more about his experience in the YouTube comments section, reflecting on the lap and hinting at the possibility of returning to the track to complete more timed runs.
“Hey everyone, Leo here. I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the positive and encouraging comments,” he shared on Charoudin’s YouTube Channel.
“Driving my own car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife was an unforgettable experience.

“As a wheelchair user, it shows me that limits are only in the mind, and moments like this are proof of what’s possible.
“A huge thanks to Misha and the Nürburgring team for giving me the chance to drive on such a legendary track.
“This year, I’m sure I’ll be visiting the Nürburgring even more often, and I can’t wait for the new experiences and memories to come.
“Sharing this with all of you and reading your amazing support makes it even more special.”
