A rare double for Mitsubishi. Green Car Journal has named the three-row Outlander and its plug-in sibling co-winners of the 2026 Family Green Car of the Year, the first time in the award’s 21-year history that sister models shared the title. It is also the fourth consecutive Family category win for the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid.

“We are thrilled that both Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid are being recognized together,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America. “These vehicles reflect Mitsubishi Motors’ commitment to sustainable, practical mobility solutions. From the mild-hybrid efficiency of Outlander to the expanded electric range of the PHEV, families will have more options than ever to enjoy eco-friendly driving without compromise.”

Why the Judges Picked Them

Editors pointed to two clear moves for 2026. The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid receives a larger battery for increased electric-only range, revised front and rear styling, an updated interior, enhanced driving dynamics, and an optional Yamaha audio system.

The gasoline Outlander adds a new mild-hybrid powertrain to improve efficiency without changing how owners refuel. Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal, summed up the decision: “Adding a mild-hybrid powertrain in the Outlander is viewed by Green Car Journal as an important evolutionary step toward improving efficiency and decreasing carbon emissions.

Styling updates, greater onboard battery power, and expanded electric range add to the Outlander PHEV’s attributes as an outstanding, environmentally positive family vehicle.”

What It Means for Families

Both updated 2026 models are scheduled to launch in the coming months, continuing with Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control for confident all-weather driving. For shoppers choosing between the two, the mild-hybrid Outlander aims at simple ownership with fewer fuel stops, while the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is designed for daily electric driving with road-trip range when needed.

Chaffin also linked the win to the brand’s product cadence: “As part of our Momentum 2030 plan, where we promised a new or revised vehicle each year from now until 2030, we strive to develop environmentally friendly innovations that balance sustainability with the real-world needs of drivers and families.”
