This is one of the most insane drug busts I think I have ever reported on. A massive marijuana seizure in Butts County, Georgia, due to a routine drug bust, ended up paving the way for a conversation about legalization.

Before you weigh in, know that the officers in this scenario discovered 1,800 pounds of the stuff during this bust. Sheriff Gary Long argues the shipment is proof that allowing legal marijuana sales doesn’t automatically make the illegal market disappear.

The Sheriff’s Office said roughly half of the seized marijuana was headed for Atlanta, while the other half was destined for Orlando. Marijuana remains heavily restricted in Georgia, while Florida permits medical marijuana under state law.

What particularly caught Long’s attention was where the shipment started. California has a legal recreational marijuana market, yet the Sheriff’s Office says the 1,800-pound shipment originated in Sacramento before making its way across the country.

Georgia Should Learn From Other States, According to the Sheriff

Long argued that legalization alone can’t eliminate demand for cheaper, unregulated marijuana. He also claimed drug-trafficking organizations can use their lower operating costs to undercut licensed businesses that have to follow state regulations.

The sheriff compared the situation to Prohibition, arguing that lawmakers can regulate a legal product but can’t simply make an underground market disappear. He pointed toward California’s continued problems with illicit cannabis sales and changes to its tax and regulatory system as something Georgia lawmakers should consider before expanding legalization.

Long wasn’t particularly subtle when talking about politicians, either. He questioned whether some lawmakers had “drank the Kool-Aid” or received enough money from marijuana lobbyists to influence the debate, before calling on Georgia to “get it right the first time.”

The sheriff also stressed that his argument wasn’t simply about whether marijuana should be legal. His larger point was that if Georgia eventually moves toward broader legalization, lawmakers should consider how regulations, taxes, and other costs could affect whether consumers and sellers stay inside the legal market.

Commenters Weren’t Exactly Convinced

A large portion of the response pushed back on Long’s argument rather than agreeing with it. Several commenters argued that marijuana’s legal status in places like Georgia is precisely what makes transporting it there profitable, with one pointing out that a pound can be worth considerably more in Georgia than in states with established recreational markets.

Others made the same argument using Prohibition, but reached the opposite conclusion from the sheriff. One commenter predicted marijuana prohibition would eventually be remembered similarly to alcohol prohibition, while another argued that letting people legally grow cannabis themselves would take even more money away from illegal sellers.

There were a few jokes mixed into the debate, including someone wondering whether deputies would be “smokin’ for Labor Day weekend” after such a huge seizure. But the overall reaction was surprisingly serious, with many commenters challenging the Sheriff’s Office’s central argument and insisting that nationwide legalization — rather than continued prohibition — is what would do the most damage to marijuana’s black market.
