Teenagers causing street takeovers or stealing cars and e-bikes often make the news nowadays, but a 15-year-old boy stealing an airport runway maintenance van is something new.
It is a bit difficult to wrap your head around this, given that airports are high-security places with full surveillance, where even a stolen paper cup would not go unnoticed.
But the unthinkable happened, not by a professional robber or a hardcore criminal, but by a schoolboy in broad daylight. And the motive? Well, it was for a joyride around town.
Mind you, a runway maintenance van is equipped with communication systems that give the driver access to ATC messages. Additionally, the van has the security clearance to access high-security areas around the airport, such as the runway. Despite the theft, airport authorities said there was no significant security threat.
Police Arrest 15-Year-Old Boy Over Airport Van Theft
According to Edinburgh Live, the incident occurred at Edinburgh Airport in the U.K. on June 25 at 11:30 a.m., when police received reports of a theft. It was found that a schoolboy had driven away in an airport van for a joyride, and a search was initiated to track it down.
The van in question was not just any ordinary airport van, but a “fully kitted out” van equipped with “two way radios with air traffic control and security access.”
In no time, the police managed to track the van and arrest the 15-year-old schoolboy, who was charged with the crime. He is due to appear in court at a later date.
A resident, who preferred to keep their identity hidden, described the van and provided additional information. They said:
“Edinburgh Airport had their runway services engineering maintenance van stolen.
“It’s fully kitted out to carry out maintenance and repairs on the runway. This van is fitted with all the radios which allow two-way communication with all the departments security and air traffic control.
“The van has since been recovered by the police and I believe suspect identified.”
Speaking about the incident, a Police Scotland spokesperson said:
“Around 11.30am on Thursday, 25 June, 2026, officers received a report of the theft of a vehicle at Edinburgh Airport.
“A 15-year-old male youth was arrested and charged in connection and is due to appear at court at a later date.”
Not a Major Security Risk
The Edinburgh Airport authorities assisted the police in the investigation, which led to the arrest of the schoolboy. Edinburgh Live reported that the airport safety protocol to protect operational systems was activated as soon as the theft was reported.
However, the report suggests the theft of the van was not a “substantive security risk.” A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said:
“A vehicle was stolen and has since been recovered. We continue to assist Police Scotland with their enquiries.”
Details about the case, such as the boy’s identity, whether an airport insider assisted him in stealing the van, and how he carried out the theft successfully without being caught, have not been disclosed.
