A Ram 1500 driver found himself scratching his head and asking the internet a simple question. What is this weird button in his truck? The short video he posted to TikTok quickly turned into something of a roadside mystery that owners and truck fans everywhere are now buzzing about.

The clip comes courtesy of user @tofu_drifter, who was cruising along in his Ram when he noticed a small control tucked low on the center console below the infotainment screen. It does not look like the usual buttons for radio or climate. It features a trailer icon and two arrows pointing left and right, with the label “Trailer Steering.” To most casual drivers it looks unusual. He went straight to social media with a simple question: “Does anybody know what that does?”

Internet to the Rescue

The internet responded right away. Some people gave curt, sometimes cranky replies like “It seems pretty self-explanatory.” Others jumped in with humor. One poster joked that it is “for uncoordinated people that can’t back a trailer up.” Another said they have the same truck but never got the feature to work. While most of these comments are playful and lighthearted, some answers were actually informative.

One commenter explained that this knob literally steers the trailer when you are backing up. Another pointed out that the backup camera and system in the truck work together to make the function work. A third noted that the idea is to take the weird logic of trailer backing out of the equation so the driver can focus on direction. The poster who made the video seemed blown away by the explanation at first, speculating out loud that he thought motors at the trailer hitch were responsible.

Official Word From the Ram Camp

Ram itself chimed in to clarify what the button really does. Noah Thanos, a representative from the truck maker’s communications team, confirmed the feature is called Trailer Reverse Steering Control. This feature is designed to help drivers who are backing up a trailer, which many people find intimidating. Instead of using the regular steering wheel for trailer backing, drivers simply rotate the knob to tell the truck how they want the trailer to move. The technology then steers the truck in the opposite direction to make the trailer go where the driver intends.

Thanos explained that the driver still controls throttle and brake normally. The truck does the heavy lifting on steering once the knob is turned. When the knob is in its resting center position, the trailer will back up straight. When it is turned left or right, the onboard system adjusts steering accordingly so the trailer moves in the intended direction. The system works with trailer calibration, so when you hook up a trailer to your Ram 1500, the technology recognizes the trailer’s dimensions and characteristics before assisting.

Big Tech for Big Trucks

This button is part of a broader suite of towing and trailering tech that comes with the newest versions of the Ram 1500. The truck is packed with other features meant to take the stress out of hauling heavy loads and tricky maneuvers. Ram describes its 2025 1500 line as one of the most advanced ever, with big screens and intuitive tow systems to match.

For many drivers, backing up a trailer is where even seasoned vehicle operators hang up their hat. Turning left to go left and right to go right does not work the same when you have a long trailer connected. Instead, a tiny movement in the opposite direction at the truck can change the path of the trailer significantly. Ram’s Trailer Reverse Steering Control aims to simplify all that by putting steering input on a dial rather than a wheel.

The TikTok that sparked all this interest has now racked up thousands of views and dozens of replies from truck lovers around the world. It shows even seasoned drivers run into moments of confusion with all the new tech in today’s vehicles. But in this case, that confusion turned into a fun moment of learning, community engagement and a deeper look at what makes modern trucks like the Ram 1500 stand out.
