There’s a long-standing belief that red cars attract more traffic tickets than vehicles of other colors. This notion suggests that the vibrant hue catches the eye of law enforcement, leading to increased scrutiny. Some drivers even avoid buying red cars, fearing they’ll be targeted unfairly. But is there any truth to this claim, or is it just another automotive myth?

Carter Mario Law Firm shares in a recent video that the myth is false. If it’s not true, why do so many people continue to believe it? To get to the bottom of this, we need to look beyond color and examine what really influences traffic citations.

The Myth of the Red Car Magnet

Many drivers have heard that owning a red car is like having a bullseye on the road. The idea is that red, being a bold and attention-grabbing color, naturally draws more attention from police officers. However, statistics tell a different story.

According to data, white vehicles actually receive the most traffic tickets, making up 19% of citations. Red cars come in second at 16%, followed by gray and silver vehicles. It’s important to note that white is the most popular car color, according to Kelley Blue Blook, and makes up about 25% of all vehicles on the road, which could explain the higher number of tickets.

While color might seem like an obvious factor in attracting tickets, other elements play more significant roles. The make and model of a vehicle, for instance, can influence the likelihood of being pulled over. Sports cars and luxury models are often associated with speeding and aggressive driving behaviors, making them more noticeable to law enforcement.

Driver behavior remains the primary factor. Speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic violations are what truly catch an officer’s attention, regardless of the vehicle’s color. It’s the actions behind the wheel that matter most.

More Behind the Myth

So, why does the myth persist? The color red is often associated with excitement, speed, and danger. This psychological association might lead people to believe that red cars are driven more aggressively, thus attracting more tickets.

Another common belief is that red cars come with higher insurance premiums. In reality, insurance companies do not factor in car color when determining rates. Instead, they focus on the driver’s record, the vehicle’s make and model, age, and other relevant factors.

If you’re eyeing that shiny red vehicle, there’s no need to worry about the color leading to more tickets.
