Abandoned Nissan 300ZX Gets A Second Chance After 28 Years

The Nissan 300ZX is one of those Japanese sports cars that still looks fantastic decades after leaving the showroom. Unfortunately, not every example has enjoyed the pampered life that a modern classic deserves.

This particular 300ZX spent nearly three decades gathering dust inside a barn, with its last registration dating back to 1998. Its once-vibrant yellow paint was buried beneath grime, and the interior had certainly seen better days.

Fortunately, the neglected Nissan recently caught the attention of popular automotive YouTuber ChrisFix, who had been searching for his first barn-find project. He teamed up with WD Detailing and Forza Automotive to give the forgotten sports car a second chance.

As documented on their YouTube channels, the project involved an extensive cleaning and cosmetic restoration. Getting the 300ZX looking presentable again was one challenge, but returning it to the road would require additional mechanical work.

According to WD Detailing, the car originally belonged to a man who was tragically killed while responding to a towing call. His sister subsequently inherited the Nissan, which stayed parked for decades.

ChrisFix discovered the car through an online listing with an asking price of $4,900. After arranging an inspection and negotiating with the seller, he purchased it for just $2,300.

Under the hood sits a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V6 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Despite its long period in storage, the engine bay appeared surprisingly tidy.

The guys began by extracting the Nissan from its resting place and transporting it to the workshop. The team then tackled the wheels, engine bay, undercarriage, and heavily soiled interior.

The paint required plenty of attention, including machine polishing to remove scratches and restore its shine. Inspection also revealed that much of the body had previously been repainted, leaving only certain sections with their original finish.

They addressed the damaged front bumper by preparing and painting a replacement Nissan component. Matching the car’s pearl-yellow finish proved challenging, requiring several attempts to get the color right.

The aftermarket rear spoiler also received attention, with the team correcting imperfections before repainting it.

Looking Good Is Only Half The Battle

By the end of the detailing process, the 300ZX looked very different from the dusty car discovered in the barn. Its bright yellow paint, distinctive styling, and refreshed interior made it easy to appreciate why enthusiasts still love these Nissans.

However, the transformation was primarily cosmetic, and the engine had not been started during WD Detailing’s video. ChrisFix still faced the task of addressing the mechanical issues before attempting to drive it.

Seeing a forgotten 300ZX rescued after nearly 28 years is satisfying enough, especially given the car’s history. Hopefully, the next chapter involves hearing that V6 fire up and watching this Japanese sports car return to the road.
