A Louisiana man had his burned pickup truck towed home from Mississippi, but five months later, police arrested him over an insurance claim tied to the fire.

Andronicus Edison, 58, of Palmetto, Louisiana, faces an automobile insurance fraud charge. State officials say he filed a false claim after a fire destroyed his Chevrolet pickup.

The truck was a 2007 model that caught fire in Natchez, Mississippi, on May 22, 2026. Edison then had it hauled back to his home in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.

After the truck arrived, he filed a claim with his insurance company. That claim would soon draw the attention of state officials, though they have yet to explain what made it false.

Something Was Off

The Louisiana Department of Insurance flagged the claim and sent it to the State Fire Marshal’s Fire Investigations Unit on July 2. According to an official news release, the case raised enough concern for the state to investigate.

By then, 41 days had passed since the fire. Investigators began looking into the claim and later found evidence they believed showed fraud.

What specifically went wrong with the paperwork remains unclear, and officials have not said what Edison told the insurance company or how much money he tried to collect.

There is also no word on whether the company paid him. The report does not explain how the truck caught fire, and Edison has not been accused of setting it.

What Comes Next

Filing a false car insurance claim can lead to prison time in Louisiana. Under state law, a person found guilty of this type of fraud can face up to five years in prison. A judge can also impose a fine of up to $5,000.

The law also allows courts to order repayment of money lost to fraud. That can include money paid by an insurer and certain costs tied to its review of a false claim.

In Edison’s case, the state has not said if any money changed hands. His charge remains an accusation, and no finding of guilt has been announced.

After reviewing the evidence, fire investigators obtained a warrant to arrest him, and St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputies took Edison into custody on October 26.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office made the arrest public on October 29. It also thanked the sheriff’s office and the Louisiana Department of Insurance for their help with the case.
