A Tesla Semi caught fire on a busy California interstate Tuesday evening, leaving emergency responders to manage a dangerous situation that brought traffic to a standstill. What’s particularly concerning is that the truck wasn’t involved in a collision before catching fire, leaving investigators trying to determine exactly what went wrong.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 5:35 p.m. on October 27, 2026, along southbound Interstate 880 near State Route 92 in Hayward, California. The truck’s lithium-ion battery caught fire, prompting authorities to shut down both directions of the freeway over concerns about potentially hazardous chemical smoke.

Fortunately, the truck’s driver escaped without injury, and authorities confirmed no other vehicles were involved. However, extinguishing the fire proved challenging, and CHP initially warned the battery could continue burning for about 15 to 18 hours.

The situation caused significant traffic disruptions throughout the evening, with northbound lanes reopening around 8:40 p.m. while southbound motorists faced a much longer wait. It wasn’t until approximately 3:30 a.m. Wednesday that the remaining lanes reopened, nearly 10 hours after the fire was first reported.

In an official statement posted to X, CHP Hayward confirmed that the Tesla Semi fire had forced authorities to completely close Interstate 880 in both directions. “A Tesla semi-truck has caught fire on I-880, resulting in a complete shutdown of both northbound and southbound lanes due to the potential risk of hazardous chemical smoke,” the agency explained.

According to additional information from CHP, the driver told officers the truck had simply caught fire and that they didn’t know what caused it. While authorities confirmed that the lithium-ion battery was burning, investigators have not determined what initially triggered the incident.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze while authorities kept motorists away from the potentially hazardous smoke, with the battery presenting additional challenges for emergency crews. Although CHP initially estimated the fire could burn for 15 to 18 hours, the highway reopened much sooner than that projection.

California Tesla Semi Fire Raises Questions About What Went Wrong

The incident has attracted attention partly because the truck caught fire without first being involved in a collision, making the circumstances different from another Tesla Semi fire in California in August 2024. In that earlier incident, a Tesla Semi crashed along Interstate 80 near Emigrant Gap before its battery ignited, and firefighters used about 50,000 gallons of water to control the blaze.

Technology commentator Andru Edwards also highlighted the distinction between the two incidents, pointing out that the Hayward fire occurred without a crash and calling for Tesla to share whatever investigators eventually discover. His concerns center on understanding why the truck caught fire, particularly as the manufacturer continues expanding its electric commercial-truck program.

For now, the most important detail is that the driver escaped unharmed and no other vehicles were involved, despite the extensive disruption to one of the Bay Area’s busiest highways. However, until investigators determine what started the fire, questions surrounding the Tesla Semi’s mechanical condition and the circumstances leading up to the blaze will remain unanswered.
