A supercharged Ford Fairlane that hadn’t been driven in 10 years is finally back on the road, and the carburetor responsible for its revival came from a lawnmower. YouTuber ThunderHead289 managed to get the V8 running with the tiny carburetor, although the results weren’t exactly impressive.
Luke, the man behind the channel, has spent years experimenting with lawnmower carburetors on car engines. This time, he decided to see whether one could supply enough fuel and air to keep a supercharged V8 running.
The Fairlane had been sitting since Luke’s college days, and getting it roadworthy again required plenty of work. Along with cleaning out years of accumulated dirt and mouse droppings, he had to deal with damaged wiring and install a temporary fuel system.
With everything hooked up, the V8 fired up surprisingly easily and even managed to take the Fairlane out on the road. Unfortunately, the tiny carburetor couldn’t supply enough air for the supercharger to build boost, leaving the hot rod with a fraction of its potential power.
A Lawnmower Carb On A Supercharged V8

Making the tiny carburetor work required a temporary fuel system with an auxiliary tank, electric pump, and separate battery. Since lawnmower carburetors normally rely on gravity-fed fuel, Luke used a regulator to limit pressure to approximately 1.5–2 psi.
The temporary fuel tank and battery were both sitting inside the passenger compartment, which wasn’t exactly reassuring, so Luke wisely kept a fire extinguisher nearby.
He also installed monitoring equipment to keep an eye on the air-fuel ratio, engine speed, and vacuum. It showed that the engine was running surprisingly well at idle, despite the tiny carburetor feeding a supercharged V8.
It Runs, But There’s Almost No Power

With the engine running, Luke took the Fairlane onto the road for its first drive in a decade. The car managed to reach roughly 55 mph, although the little carburetor severely restricted its performance.
The biggest problem was airflow. The carburetor couldn’t supply enough air for the supercharger to generate boost, effectively leaving the V8 struggling against the blower’s mechanical drag.
Luke wasn’t exactly surprised by the result. In an earlier experiment, a similar lawnmower carburetor had reduced a 322-horsepower engine to just 49 horsepower.
Back On The Road After A Decade

Despite the disappointing performance, the drive was a personal milestone for Luke. He hadn’t driven the Fairlane since his college days, making the experience a welcome trip down memory lane.
The lawnmower carburetor was never intended as a permanent solution, and Luke plans to replace it with a proper unit. Once that happens, the supercharged Fairlane should finally be able to light up its rear tires.
