An off-duty deputy came upon a crash near Columbine High School in Colorado and found an unconscious driver inside a Jeep that was burning.
Deputy Dobson was heading south on Pierce at about 12:48 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, when he encountered the crash, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. A Jeep Grand Cherokee had slammed into a light pole.
With the driver still inside, Dobson rushed to help. Smoke and fire were billowing from the Jeep as he pulled the man out.
Another deputy soon arrived and checked the Jeep for other passengers while Dobson stayed with the driver.

While the second deputy searched, the Jeep became fully engulfed in flames.
An off-duty nurse arrived and took over the driver’s care from Dobson, and paramedics transported the man to a nearby hospital.
In its public account, the sheriff’s office praised Dobson and thanked the nurse, community members who helped, and the fire and EMS crews who responded.
“He was off duty, but his commitment to our community was not,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
South Metro firefighters extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby vegetation and homes.
