A semi-truck hauling a load of French fries caught fire along a Utah highway, prompting a quick response from local first responders and leaving authorities with one particularly unfortunate casualty: a trailer full of fries.
According to a local news update from Emery County Sheriff Tyson Huntington, the Emery County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) Dispatch Center received a call around 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, reporting a semi-truck on fire near mile marker 293 on State Route 6.
Dispatch contacted Green River Fire and notified the on-duty ECSO deputy in Green River. However, responders soon learned that this was no ordinary truck fire. The burning trailer was hauling French fries.
The Sheriff’s Office Facebook post added a humorous twist, joking that while the situation might have tempted some people to stop at home for ketchup or fry sauce, Deputy Josh Opp had more pressing matters to attend to. Instead of making an emergency condiment run, Opp headed straight to the scene to help tackle the unusual roadside emergency.
Deputy Opp and the Green River Fire Department arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze before things could get even more heated.
French Fries Were on the Menu, but Not Like This
The unusual cargo gave the incident a humorous twist, even as first responders worked to bring the fire under control. A trailer full of French fries catching fire is certainly an unexpected headline, although the situation could have been much worse.
Green River Fire Chief Steph Crabtree told officials that the fire may have started because of a problem with one of the trailer’s axles. The cause has not been officially confirmed.
Fortunately, the truck driver was able to disconnect the tractor from the burning trailer, saving the truck itself from the fire. And while losing a trailer full of French fries is enough to ruin anyone’s day, there was some genuinely good news: no one was injured.
Sheriff Thanks First Responders After Fire
Huntington expressed his gratitude to the Green River first responders for their quick action, which helped bring the incident under control.
The sheriff’s account also struck a lighthearted note about the unusual cargo, joking that it was always sad to lose French fries. It’s an understandable sentiment.
Although the fire was no laughing matter for the first responders, the unusual circumstances made for an unconventional local news story in Utah. Thankfully, and most importantly, the driver suffered no injuries, the tractor was saved, and first responders quickly brought the blaze under control.
As for the fries? Their final destination remains unclear, but one thing is certain: this shipment wasn’t going to make it to potential dinner tables.
