Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has brought his customized 1959 Chevrolet Impala convertible to Jay Leno’s Garage, showing off a classic that looks surprisingly original until the accelerator hits the floor. Beneath its vintage styling sits a modern V8 engine and several upgrades designed to make it easier to drive.

The black-on-black Impala combines traditional lowrider styling with the performance and convenience of a modern restomod. Barker has retained much of the car’s original character while improving its mechanical components.

Leno, who remembers seeing these cars when they were new, was particularly impressed by the Impala’s condition and distinctive styling. The 1959 model featured a unique body design, complete with dramatic horizontal tailfins that made it unmistakable on American roads.

During the episode, Barker explained that his goal was to create a comfortable cruiser that could deliver serious acceleration whenever he wanted. The result is a classic Chevrolet with two very different personalities.

The Impala originally left the factory with a 348-cubic-inch V8, but Barker has replaced it with a modern Chevrolet LS3. He estimates the engine produces approximately 495 horsepower, although no verified output figure was provided.

The upgrades also include Wilwood disc brakes at the front, a MagnaFlow exhaust system, and Vintage Air air conditioning. Barker wanted to keep the car dependable enough for regular driving without worrying about the limitations of its decades-old engine.

During their test drive, Leno praised the Impala’s smooth ride and surprisingly strong acceleration. Barker described its character as having two sides: a relaxed cruiser during ordinary driving and a much quicker machine when pushed.

The Impala still has the black paint it wore when Barker purchased it from its previous owner in Texas. Its appearance is enhanced by 14-inch Dayton wire wheels, an adjustable suspension system that allows the car to sit extremely low when parked, and a rear-mounted Continental spare-wheel kit.

Inside, the cabin maintains a largely factory-inspired appearance, although the upholstery is not original. Barker also replaced the oversized factory steering wheel with a smaller version.

He explained that making his collection enjoyable for his wife to drive was another priority. The modifications preserve the Impala’s classic appearance while improving everyday usability.

Barker’s enthusiasm for classic American cars began during his childhood in Fontana, California, where his father regularly worked on old Cadillacs, and that influence continues to shape his collection today.

He told Leno that he currently owns approximately 12 vehicles, including a 1960 Cadillac, a 1962 Impala wagon, a 1963 Impala convertible, and a Buick GNX. His garage also includes several classic Chevrolet trucks and Blazers, alongside a Mazda Cosmo.

Despite owning an impressive collection, Barker still hopes to track down the 1982 Chevrolet square-body pickup he once owned. His modified Impala illustrates the approach he now favors: classic looks, modern mechanicals, and enough performance to make every drive entertaining.
