The Citroën 2CV Is Making A Comeback, Complete With A Place To Store Your Eggs

Citroën has revived one of France’s most recognizable cars, and the result is every bit as eccentric as you might expect. Unveiled at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the new 2 CV Concept reimagines the beloved little French runabout as an affordable electric city car.

The original 2CV was introduced in 1948 as simple, practical transportation for ordinary people. It stayed in production until 1990, becoming an automotive icon thanks to its distinctive styling, clever engineering, and famously uncomplicated character.

Now, Citroën wants to bring that philosophy into the electric era without losing the personality that made the original so popular. The concept combines familiar design cues with a surprisingly playful interior and some genuinely useful features.

Better still, this isn’t simply a design exercise destined to disappear into a museum. Citroën plans to introduce a production model inspired by the concept by 2028, targeting a starting price of approximately €15,000.

A Familiar Face With A Modern Twist

Measuring just 3.76 meters long, the new 2 CV Concept is actually shorter than its predecessor. Its rounded headlights, pronounced wheel arches, curved roof, and upright windshield make the family resemblance immediately obvious.

Modern touches include LED lighting, a contrasting black tailgate, and large 18-inch steel wheels. A retractable fabric roof pays tribute to the original, while separately mounted bumpers are designed to simplify repairs. The bright Infra Red paintwork gives the little Citroën an especially cheerful appearance.

An Interior With Plenty Of French Personality

Inside, Citroën has abandoned the conventional dashboard in favor of a cylindrical structure supporting the single-spoke steering wheel, gear selector, and essential controls. An eight-inch touchscreen and a slim driver information display provide the necessary technology.

The colorful cabin features yellow tartan upholstery, fabric door pulls, and a removable storage basket instead of a traditional center console. There’s also a detachable speaker called Radioën and a pull-out front seat designed for relaxing during stops.

Perhaps the most amusing detail is the specially designed door storage for eggs, referencing the original 2CV’s famous requirement to transport eggs across rough farmland without breaking them. Even the pedals feature rabbit and tortoise symbols.

Affordable Electric Mobility By 2028

Citroën is targeting a vehicle weight of approximately 1,000 kilograms, allowing the production version to use a smaller, less expensive battery. However, the company hasn’t disclosed motor output, battery capacity, driving range, or charging specifications.

The future model will be manufactured in Europe and developed around proposed European E-Car regulations. Positioned between the Ami and C3, it aims to make electric motoring accessible without sacrificing character.

If Citroën can preserve the concept’s charm while meeting its ambitious price target, the revived 2CV could become one of Europe’s most interesting affordable electric cars.
