A shooting outside a Florida McDonald’s led sheriff’s deputies to a nearby home early Sunday morning, where a second exchange of gunfire left a 39-year-old man critically wounded and facing five attempted murder charges.
Casey King was shot multiple times by a Sarasota County deputy after deputies surrounded his residence and ordered him to surrender. The sheriff’s office said King fired at deputies positioned outside the house before one of them returned fire.
The confrontation unfolded after gunfire was reported in a McDonald’s parking lot near two busy Sarasota roads. No injuries were reported at the restaurant, but the person suspected of firing the shots had disappeared before deputies arrived.
By the end of the encounter, King was in custody at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and the sheriff’s office was examining two connected shootings that occurred within the same community.
First Shots
The initial shooting occurred at approximately 12:19 a.m. on October 11 in the McDonald’s parking lot near the intersection of Bee Ridge Road and Cattlemen Road.
According to an official release from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, the suspected shooter left before responding deputies reached the restaurant.
Deputies subsequently identified King as the suspect and determined that he had returned to his home at 4818 Hoyer Drive.
The sheriff’s office has not publicly explained what triggered the McDonald’s shooting or how deputies connected King to the incident.
Outside The House
Patrol deputies arrived at King’s residence and established positions around the property.
Rather than immediately entering the home, a deputy made several announcements from a marked patrol vehicle with its siren activated, directing King to exit the residence and surrender.
The announcements did not produce a surrender.
The sheriff’s office reported that King opened fire on deputies positioned in front of the residence. One deputy returned fire, striking him multiple times.
Deputies then took King into custody and transported him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was listed in critical but stable condition in the October 11 release.
The agency did not specify how many shots were fired, how many deputies were present, or whether any deputies were injured.
Five Counts
King faces five counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer stemming from the gunfire directed at deputies outside his home.
The sheriff’s office also expects additional charges related to the earlier shooting at McDonald’s.
The criminal accusations against King have not been adjudicated, and the charges are not findings of guilt.
The sheriff’s office has not identified the deputy who shot King or released body-worn camera footage of the confrontation.
The case remained an active investigation as of October 11, with the circumstances surrounding both shootings still under examination.
