It may seem cliché, but is there any place more autumnal than a pumpkin patch? Whether it’s a small and humble pumpkin patch or a vast pumpkin farm, the beautiful sight of orange and yellow pumpkins evokes a sense of wonder that comes during this season.

Pumpkin patches provide the perfect place for taking autumn-themed photos, enjoying the atmosphere, and purchasing a gourd or two for carving, decorating, or culinary purposes. They often also have fun activities like hay rides, corn mazes, and games that families especially will enjoy.

Notable pumpkin patches and farms in the U.S. include Schuster’s Farm in Deerfield, Wisconsin, Swans Trail Farms in Snohomish, Washington, Jumbo’s Pumpkin Patch in Middletown, Maryland, and Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in Gretna, Nebraska. In California, I’m partial to the Goff Family Pumpkin Patch, Bates Nut Farm, Irvine Park Railroad, and Tanaka Farms.

2. Apple Orchards

If pumpkin patches are the gold standard of cozy autumn destinations, apple orchards are a close second. Imbued with a nostalgia for a bygone era, a trip to an apple orchard transports us to a simpler time. Whether you go apple picking or admire the trees, orchards remain one of the true Fall beauties.

Some famous U.S. orchards include Minard’s Family Farm in Clintondale, New York, Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Connecticut, Bellwood Farms in Lyndon, Washington, Crane Orchards in Fernville, Michigan, and Julian Farm and Orchard in Julian, California.

3. Cider Mills

If you enjoy visiting Apple orchards, why not go the extra apple mile and take a trip to a cider mill. Cozy in a very different way, cider mills can be fun, fascinating, and educational. You can learn how the cider is made, taste fresh batches, and indulge in sweet treats like apple cider donuts.

Some cider mills are attached to orchards such as the historic Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard in Fly Creek, New York. Others go all out with Fall activities. Blake’s Funland at Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill, which features family-friendly rides, pig races, and a petting zoo.

Like apple orchards, you won’t find Cider Mills in every region of the U.S. New York and Michigan have the most. Despite scarcity, they’re worth seeking out, especially for those who love autumn activities.

4. Fall Foliage

Autumn’s beauty comes in many forms, and the pinnacle remains fall foliage. One of nature’s wonders, the way leaves change to red, orange, and yellow transforms our landscapes into golden dreams.

While only certain states are worth visiting for fall foliage, it remains a nature lover’s paradise, especially for those who enjoy walking, hiking, taking photos, and soaking in the lovely atmosphere. Indeed, a crisp autumn day among the foliage is unmatched.

States with the most beautiful foliage include Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Michigan, Colorado, and Connecticut. Check out videos from Allison Bickerstaff, Justin Scarred, and James and Meg for itinerary ideas.

5. Cozy Movie Locations

If you read our Halloween Movie Filming Locations guide, you will remember that film fans can visit numerous places during the Fall season. However, a quintessential cozy list should look a bit different and go in three different routes.

The more traditional Halloween route take you to Salem, particularly the filming locations for Hocus Pocus. You can visit the charming neighborhoods where they filmed the movie’s early scenes, including Max and Dani’s house, Allison’s house, the cemetery, and the high school. Check out World of Micah for a detailed look at all these locations.

For a much different change of pace, head to New York City to visit locations from You’ve Got Mail. The romantic comedy that wistfully says, “Don’t you love New York in the Fall?” It also captures a cozy atmosphere despite the city’s vastness. The Upper-West-Side locations include: The Sunshinery, a charming shop that was used as The Shop Around the Corner storefront, and sells You’ve Got Mail gifts, the buildings used for the outside of Joe and Kathleen’s apartment, Zabar’s, a speciality food market (make sure you try one of their sandwiches), and the 91st Street Garden at Riverside Park, where the final romantic moments were filmed. Check out first_class_seats on Instagram and Kayy Lively on YouTube for more details.

For a dark academia cozy atmosphere, head to several of the places where the Harry Potter movies were filmed. These include Oxford, Cambridge, and various locations in Scotland and England, such as Leadenhall Market in London, Durham Cathedral, and Alwick Castle. For the ultimate cozy Harry Potter experience, visit one of the Airbnb sites that feel as if you stepped inside a magical world, including Muggle Manor in Orlando, Florida, and The Highland Club in Scotland.

6. Visit a Theme Park

Speaking of Harry Potter, a trip to Universal Studios in either Hollywood, California, or Orlando, Florida, could be on your cozy travel list. Although a theme park hardly seems cozy, when it comes to the Wizarding World areas, the vibes are impeccable.

The various shops remain incredibly authentic, from the decor to the Hogwarts merchandise. In both Hollywood and Orlando, nothing feels as cozy as the Three Broomsticks, the magical-themed pub with traditional cuisine and an Old British atmosphere with dark wood tables and candles. At Orlando’s Epic Universe, the French-inspired area that evokes the Fantastic Beasts films feels equally grand and intimate, particularly the Parisian Cafe and shops.

If a Disney theme park is more your taste, Disneyland in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, will provide all the wholesome autumnal vibes with a unique twist. In both parks, Main Street U.S.A. still features that old-fashioned nostalgic atmosphere, but with adorably carved pumpkins everywhere, including a large Mickey pumpkin. Grab a coffee or pumpkin spice latte, an autumn treat, find a bench, and let the serenity of Main Street envelop you.

Besides Main Street, Frontierland also has those old-fashioned autumn vibes, especially in Disneyland. Outside Pioneer Mercantile, you’ll find fall decor along with the Ray Bradbury Halloween tree. Though lovely during the day, at night the tree truly comes to life with hundreds of glowing orange lights.

7. Autumnal Tours

For those searching for something both cozy and informative, a Halloween or Autumnal tour will be the way to go. Cities all across the U.S. feature guided tours during the Fall, highlighting fascinating history, architectural or natural beauty, and sometimes spooky insights.

Instead of exploring on your own, you can take a Color Hike or Fall Foliage tour, such as the Fall Flora and Fungi Tour in the Catskills, New York, and Fall Foliage and History Tour in Grafton, Illinois.

Other notable walking tours include Boston’s Freedom Trail and Ghosts and Gravestones Tour, and The History and Hauntings of Salem tour. There are also several in Sleepy Hollow, New York, including the daytime Cemetery Tour, evening Lantern Tour, Sleepy Hollow Strolls, and Tarryhollow Walking Tours.

8. Old-Fashioned Diners and Pubs

As far as I’m concerned, diners are always a good idea. But the type of diner should vary depending on the time of year. While Spring and Summer feels like a companion to the quintessential 1950s jukebox type of the diner, Autumn belongs to the rustic, woodsy diner that looks like it could be found in a National Park. Pubs are very similar, particularly historic pubs with their rustic atmosphere reminiscent of Colonial America.

You’ll find diners that feature that woodsy atmosphere and traditional comfort food all across the U.S. First opening in 1995 in Mount Shasta, California, The Black Bear Diner now has 168 diners in 14 states across the West and Midwest, ranking among the most popular restaurants of its kind. Other notable ones include Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant in Sevierville, Tennessee, famous for its apple fritters and syrup, and Square Diner, a converted train car located in the Tribeca area of Manhattan, New York. I am partial to Julian Cafe and Bakery, which feels undeniably Autumn coded all year round, and the Palm Springs gem, King’s Highway Diner.

Those longing for a dark, historic pub look no further than America’s oldest, the White Horse Tavern. Located in Newport, Rhode Island, the atmosphere indeed feels cozy and autumnal with its dark wood interiors and large fireplaces. There’s also the New Orleans staple, Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, with its rustic charm of exposed brick and supposedly haunted fireplace, and King’s Arm Tavern, a quintessential part of Colonial Williamsburg.

9. Mountain Lodges and Cabins

While a visit to a mountain lodge or cabin has its fun and charm any time of year, the Autumn season feels like the ideal time for a visit. The weather is cool and crisp, a happy medium between the hot summer and snowy winter. Indeed, Fall at a mountain lodge would have the best of indoor and outdoor activities. Wilderness Lodges and Autumn go hand in hand. The finest National Park lodges have that woodsy style and ambiance with the added benefit of National Park proximity. Some of the most popular include Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite, El Tovar at the Grand Canyon, and Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone.

Other notable mountain lodges include The Lodge at Blue Sky in Wanship, Utah, Whiteface Lodge in the beautiful Adirondacks of Lake Placid, New York, the Grand Idyllwild Lodge in California, and Colorado’s famous Stanley Hotel.

For a more low-key and intimate mountain autumn experience, consider a cabin, particularly an old-fashioned log cabin that feels straight out of another time. Some of the best places to rent a cabin are the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Big Bear or Mammoth in California, Colorado, Montana, and Utah. But all across America you’ll find lovely mountain cabins perfect for a cozy getaway.

10. Vintage and Small Bookstores

Cozy autumn days should include many things from a delicious treat and drink to cable knit sweaters and cool, crisp temperatures. Wandering through local shops like thrift and antique stores belongs on the agenda as well. However, above all, vintage and smaller bookstores have that Fall feeling.

It’s difficult to pinpoint why, but the sights and sounds of smaller bookshops seem to fit perfectly with Autumn, more so than any other season. The magic of this Fall activity lies in discovery. Sometimes you stumble upon a cozy bookstore by chance; other times a little research helps. Whatever your preferred method, finding that perfect Fall bookstore also makes for a perfect Autumn day.
