Even if deputies have clocked out for the day, they are trained to stay alert and ready to respond when something crops up.

Whether facing an unexpected emergency or simply going about their duties, that awareness and willingness to help can make a remarkable and sometimes life-changing difference, turning an ordinary moment into an opportunity to protect others.

And this was shown as a prime example in Clay County, Missouri, on September 15, 2026.

Detective Jason Findley had just finished his shift and was heading to the Riverside Police Department to assist with an explosive sweep at the Morton Amphitheater when he encountered the burning truck.

Detective Findley Stops To Help

Deputy Blatt was driving on I-35 in Claycomo (on the other side of the road) that afternoon when he saw Findley pulled over near a truck that had crashed and was engulfed in flames.

Blatt also pulled over, jumped over the median, and ran toward the scene. Together, the two law enforcement officers moved the driver away from the burning vehicle. He said he saw black smoke rising into the air as he approached the scene.

“I just saw black smoke going up in the air,” Blatt said to FOX4 Morning News. “As I got closer, I saw Detective Findley and the burning car, and he was trying to get the driver out of the vehicle. I wasn’t really thinking. I was just trying to figure out if there were more people in the car.”

Dashcam and body-camera footage, later shown on the Clay County Sheriff’s Facebook page, captured the dramatic rescue. The footage shows Findley approaching the burning truck and pulling the disoriented driver from the driver’s side.

“I saw flames and flying, burning debris coming out from underneath the vehicle,” Findley said. “So, I turned on my lights and sirens. Doing fire investigations, we know how fast those vehicles become involved and completely melt and burn.”

By the time Blatt reached the crash, the driver was already on the ground. The two officers grabbed his arms and pulled him farther away from the burning truck.

Moments later, the vehicle exploded.

Driver Taken to Hospital

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was taken to a hospital with burns to his legs.

The sheriff’s office said that without the intervention of Findley and Blatt, the situation could have been much worse.

The driver has since returned home to his family, while both officers reflected on the chance encounter that brought them to the scene.

For Findley, helping was never about who was inside the vehicle.

“I hope he’s okay and hope he has a good recovery,” Findley said. “It didn’t matter who was in that truck; we were going to help them.”

Blatt also expressed relief that the driver survived and was able to return home.

“I’m happy he’s back with his family,” Blatt said. “His family’s able to see him, so I’m very glad that he’s able to take another opportunity with them.”

Understandably, Detective Findley and Deputy Blatt are now hailed as heroes for putting their own safety aside to rescue a driver trapped beside a burning truck. Their quick actions helped prevent a dangerous situation from becoming a tragedy and allowed the injured driver to return home to his loved ones.
