Sniffer dogs can be crucial in getting to the bottom of drug cases, and sometimes their use can arise in the most unlikely of circumstances. Officers may be investigating one matter, in this case, multiple vehicle code violations, when a trained K-9 alerts them to something they weren’t initially looking for.
A traffic stop in Roseville, California, began with officers investigating multiple vehicle code violations. But their day ended with the discovery of approximately three pounds of methamphetamine after their K-9 friend, Ciro, trained to detect illegal narcotics, alerted officers to drugs inside the vehicle.
Their importance in helping officers cannot be overstated, as this case shows how their role can influence the direction and outcome of an investigation.
K-9s have such a potent sense of smell, and in this case, Ciro helped contribute to the arrest of two individuals.
Two Arrested
It’s 1 a.m. on September 11, when Roseville Police officers stopped a Kia Sorento near Riverside Avenue and Interstate 80.
While looking for vehicle code violations, Ciro alerted officers to the presence of drugs inside the vehicle. Officers proceeded to search the car, only to find approximately three pounds of methamphetamine concealed within the car.
Carrie Waldemar, 45, and Nicolas Brown, 42, were later arrested and booked into the South Placer County Jail for two separate charges – the possession of methamphetamine and for sale and transportation of a controlled substance.
Ciro Saves the Day
The post drew a largely positive response, with many commenters praising K-9 Ciro and the Roseville Police Department.
One commenter stated, “I hope Ciro got a great Scooby snack after that!!” Another asked whether Ciro received “a steak that night for dinner,” while several others simply wrote, “Great job Ciro” and “K-9 hero.”
Others focused on the police department’s work. One commenter wrote, “Keep these drugs out of all communities. Thank you RPD.”
