R&B singer Jacquees was apparently sleeping deeply enough inside a Jeep Gladiator that tapping on the window wasn’t going to do the trick. Police say firefighters eventually had to break a window to reach the 32-year-old singer after first responders couldn’t wake him Sunday morning.

According to Local10 news, Hollywood Police received a call shortly before 8 a.m. on September 27 concerning someone who appeared to be passed out inside a vehicle near North 62nd Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Officers arrived and found Jacquees, whose legal name is Rodriquez Broadnax, asleep inside a white Jeep Gladiator, according to police.

An arrest report states that an officer repeatedly tapped on the driver’s side window in an attempt to wake Broadnax, but he remained unresponsive. Firefighters also shook the Jeep without success before eventually punching out the right front window to reach him.

Getting inside the Jeep wasn’t the end of the encounter, either, as police say Broadnax became combative with first responders while he was being transported to a hospital. Police say he later punched an officer in the arm as the officer attempted to stop him from leaving the ambulance.

According to police, the officer responded by striking Broadnax in the face with his forearm while the singer resisted being placed onto a stretcher. The information provided does not indicate that the encounter resulted in any serious injuries to Broadnax, the officer or other first responders.

Broadnax was ultimately arrested on charges of DUI, resisting an officer without violence, and battery on an officer, firefighter or EMT. Broward County records reviewed by Guessing Headlights similarly list charges of first-offense DUI involving alcohol or drugs, resisting an officer or obstructing without violence, and battery on an officer, firefighter or EMT.

Those records identify Broadnax as a 32-year-old Georgia resident arrested by Hollywood Police on September 27. Jacquees is an Atlanta R&B singer known for songs including “B.E.D.” and “You.”

Jacquees Was Initially Held on Bond

Broadnax was initially held at the Broward County Main Jail on a $3,500 bond, according to Local 10. The outlet reported that he was no longer appearing in the county’s online jail database shortly before noon on Monday.

Guessing Headlights also searched the Broward Sheriff’s Office website and its social media profiles for additional official information concerning the arrest. We were unable to locate a separate public statement or incident report providing details beyond the available law enforcement records as of the writing of this article.

What began with a Sunday morning call about someone passed out behind the wheel ultimately required firefighters to physically break into the Jeep before police say the situation escalated during the trip to the hospital. Before any of that could happen, though, first responders had to solve the more immediate problem: neither repeated knocking nor shaking the vehicle was enough to wake the singer.
