Its owner has had this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air for more than 40 years, but the wagon ended up being stowed away in a garage for decades when family responsibilities eventually took priority.
According to his son Aaron, the car had spent roughly three decades sitting in the garage and hadn’t been driven in about 15 years.
With his father’s 74th birthday approaching, Aaron decided it was finally time to do something about it. He secretly enlisted WD Detailing to extract the wagon, clean it up, and, hopefully, get it back on the road.
They had only seven days to make it happen, and the owner had no idea his pride and joy was even gone. Underneath 30 years of dust, grime, and oxidation, however, there was still a remarkably colorful ’57 Chevy waiting to come back.
Washing Away Decades Of Dirt
Once the wagon arrived at WD Detailing’s shop, the team discovered its two-tone paint was single-stage, meaning there was no clear coat protecting it. That ruled out their usual pre-wash and required a more careful approach.
After pressure washing away the accumulated grime, the teal-and-white finish started emerging again. The wheels received similar attention, with rust and oxidation carefully removed before the body was washed, decontaminated, and eventually polished.
The interior needed plenty of work as well. Decades of leaves and debris were vacuumed out, while the old carpet was removed and deep-cleaned rather than simply replaced.
This wasn’t a factory-original time capsule, either. The wagon had aftermarket front seats and had been repainted at some point, while its original engine had also been replaced sometime during its life.
Getting The Chevy Running Again
Cleaning the Bel Air was only half the birthday present. WD Detailing also wanted the Chevy to arrive under its own power, which meant waking an engine that hadn’t propelled the car down the road in years.
The small-block V8 initially presented several problems, including deteriorated battery cables, a leaking fuel line, ignition issues, and a carburetor that leaked heavily around its accelerator pump. The team eventually installed fresh battery cables, a new carburetor, cap, rotor, plug wires, and spark plugs.
Fresh fuel went into the tank, the brakes were bled, and a matching set of new whitewall tires replaced the tired old rubber. After a little persuasion, the V8 fired and settled into a smooth idle. Better still, the Chevy could move under its own power again.
One Seriously Good Birthday Present
After the final polish brought some shine back to the old paint, the wagon was driven to the owner’s house for the surprise. His reaction began with the question: “When did you take my car out?”
He wasn’t complaining, though. After hearing everything that had been done, the longtime owner was already talking about taking the Chevy out and driving it again.
Thirty years of garage dust disappeared in a matter of days, but WD Detailing wisely left the wagon’s age and character intact. For a 74th birthday present, getting an old family member back on the road is pretty difficult to beat.
