For American readers, Britain’s A-roads are broadly comparable to major U.S. routes: they connect towns, cities, and rural communities and can range from relatively quiet rural roads to busy urban areas.

Speed limits vary by road and location. On some rural A-roads, a national speed limit of 60 mph is posted, while roads approaching densely populated urban areas may have limits as low as 20 or 30 mph for obvious safety reasons.

So when one man decided to overtake an unmarked police car on the A60 between Worksop and Cuckney, in Nottinghamshire, back on May 25, 2026, the situation soon escalated.

More Than 115 Mph

32-year-old Johnpaul Allen was driving a Range Rover Sport with a child in the passenger seat when he overtook the unmarked police vehicle at around 9:30 p.m., according to Nottinghamshire Police.

Video footage released by officers showed that after overtaking, Allen narrowly avoided an oncoming car before accelerating away from the unmarked police vehicle.

Officers then followed Allen as he drove toward Warsop, where police say he reached speeds exceeding 115 mph. He slowed near average-speed cameras around Cuckney before continuing toward Warsop. Once there, police said the Range Rover reached speeds of up to 75 mph in a 30-mph zone.

He also carried out further overtaking maneuvers, with dashcam footage showing him quickly moving into the opposite lane to pass another vehicle before returning to his lane. He eventually stopped and was detained by officers from Nottinghamshire Police’s Road Crime Team.

Punishment

When stopped by police, he told officers that he expected to lose his driver’s license and that he had previously been convicted of drunk driving.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Nottingham Crown Court. On September 15, 2026, he was sentenced to six months in prison and disqualified from driving for 16 months.

Nottinghamshire Police Constable Ky Kirk said: “He put countless drivers, pedestrians and other road users at risk that evening, not to mention the child who was alongside him in the Land Rover.”

Fortunately, there were no crashes or other reported incidents, and no injuries were reported. But situations like this can quickly put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.

Facebook Debates Whether Justice Was Served

The sentence prompted debate on social media, with several commenters saying Allen’s six-month prison term and 16-month driving ban did not go far enough.

“Should be six years, not six months,” one person wrote, while another said he should receive a life driving ban. Others questioned whether he would comply with the ban once released.

The presence of a child in the passenger seat also drew strong reactions. “Poor child,” one commenter wrote.

Some users also pointed to the incident as a reason for unmarked police cars and speed cameras, arguing that drivers are more likely to be caught when they do not know they are being monitored.
