Plenty of people have pet peeves about the stuff they hate spending money on. Whether it’s the 15 different streaming services you need to watch your favorite shows, or the belief that utilities like water should be free, there are some payments we all just hate making.
For one woman on Threads, her least favorite way to spend her money involves her car. “I hate spending my girl money on things like car maintenance,” Threads user @daijahlenae wrote on Sept. 24. In less than 24 hours, her post went viral with more than 24,200 views.
The comments also quickly filled up with people sharing the things they hate paying for. As it turns out, most people share @daijahlenae’s distaste for spending money on things that have to do with their cars.
And while a few people pushed back, annoyed that others were complaining about routine expenses, most people had a pretty good sense of humor about their complaints. That all turned this vent session into a truly funny read.
A Lot of People Had Specific Gripes
View on Threads
While the original post was pretty general, plenty of people jumped in with the specific things they hate paying for when it comes to their vehicles.
“Like, do I have to get my tires rotated for real?” one person wrote. “They rotate every day when I drive.”
“Me getting iced coffees when I need windshield wipers,” another person added.
“No, because why did I pay $400 for maintenance and they just changed the air filter,” someone else added. “Then they had the audacity to call me while being whimsy at a vineyard that my wipers need replacing and it will cost me another $130?!? Girl math is not mathing.”
And then some laughed at the concept of not needing to pay for anything with your car. “We know, y’all just want to drive forever like the car is magical,” one person wrote. “As an auto engineer, this is hilarious to me.”
There Were Other Big Expenses in the Mix
While most people jumped on the original poster’s complaints about auto-related expenses, some people shared other budget-busting things they paid for recently. “Girl, I gotta pay to get my shutters fixed,” one person wrote. “My shutters? Instead of perfume.”
“Girl, I had to spend $1,000 on plumbing this week, and I’m like, can I not, please?”
Experts Advise Saving Up for Car Expenses
It can be frustrating to have to spend money you didn’t expect to when big-ticket items need fixing or replacing. That’s why AAA suggests saving up for these auto-related costs ahead of time. According to the outlet, you should set aside around $100 a month for a typical vehicle, which should cover those routine expenses like oil changes, new tires, and other common issues.
But that doesn’t mean that you won’t still get a surprise bill. AAA says larger ticket items like transmission replacements (which can run between $2,500 and $6,000) and alternator failures (which can cost $500 to $1,000) do still happen, so you may want to set aside some additional money to cover emergencies.
Of course, even knowing that these costs are coming would likely still be annoying to the people in the original post. But at least you know they can laugh about it when things like this come up.
