Land Rover Defender colors aren’t staying on four wheels anymore. PRS Guitars and artist John Mayer have teamed up with Defender to create a collection of Silver Sky electric guitars inspired directly by the off-roader’s color palette.
Called the Defender Color Collection, the collaboration includes eight finishes divided between U.S.-made PRS Silver Sky and more accessible SE Silver Sky models. Four classic Defender colors are reserved for the American-built guitars, while four contemporary shades appear on the SE.
The crossover has a personal connection for Mayer, who has owned a Defender finished in Arles Blue for nearly two decades. PRS says his appreciation for the distinctive colors offered on the British 4×4 ultimately inspired the collection.
Mayer personally selected the eight colors, and PRS carried the Defender theme into details, including the pickguards, control knobs, headstocks, and cases. If you’ve ever wanted your guitar to match your Defender, someone has finally thought of you.
Four Classic Defender Colors
The U.S.-made Silver Sky Defender Limited Edition comes in Arles Blue, Willow Green, Portofino Red, and Sandglow Yellow. Each is paired with a white pickguard and control knobs, mimicking the contrasting white roofs associated with classic Defenders.
PRS will build only 500 examples of each color worldwide, resulting in 2,000 guitars across the four finishes. They also receive matching painted headstocks, Defender-branded backplates identifying the individual color, and exclusive hard cases carrying the Defender logo.
The color choices span several chapters of Defender history. Sandglow Yellow references the expedition and challenge vehicles of the past, while Willow Green recalls the model’s rural roots, and Arles Blue connects directly to Mayer’s own Defender.
The SE Gets Modern Defender Shades
PRS has taken a different approach with the SE Silver Sky. These guitars use four contemporary Defender-inspired finishes: Petra Copper, Sedona Red, Carpathian Grey, and Woolstone Green.
Black pickguards and control knobs replace the white hardware of the heritage collection, creating a look inspired by modern Defenders with contrasting black roofs. Each guitar also gets a Defender-branded backplate and an exclusive PRS/Defender gig bag.
Production isn’t capped at a specific number, unlike the U.S.-made collection. However, PRS says orders will only stay open until the middle of 2027, making these models time-limited rather than strictly production-limited.
John Mayer Gets His Two Passions Together
Mayer described the collaboration as a crossover between two of his biggest passions, having collected Defenders while developing his long-running relationship with PRS. His Arles Blue truck naturally provided the starting point for the heritage collection.
It’s an unusually literal meeting of automotive and music culture. Plenty of guitars have colors that sound like they belong on cars, but these Silver Skys give Defender enthusiasts the opportunity to own the same shades on something that comes with six strings instead of four-wheel drive.
