The Mercedes-AMG G63 isn’t exactly known for subtlety, but Brabus has somehow found a way to make it even more outrageous. Removing the roof and nearly doubling down on supercar performance is apparently one way to do it.
Meet the Brabus 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio, a four-door convertible based on the latest W465-generation G63. It’s also the first open-top model in the history of Brabus’ high-performance Rocket series.
This isn’t simply a G-Class with its roof removed and some fabric stretched over the resulting hole. Brabus says it developed over 500 new components to make the convertible transformation work while retaining the SUV’s unmistakably boxy shape.
Then there’s the engine. Brabus has extracted 900 horsepower from the G63’s heavily reworked V8, giving this enormous four-door convertible enough performance to embarrass plenty of actual sports cars.
Turning A G63 Into A Convertible Isn’t Easy
The centerpiece is a complex two-piece soft top that opens or closes in 20 seconds and includes a heated glass rear window. A reinforced windshield frame, carbon-fiber roof bow, and steel “C-BOW” roll bar behind the rear doors help provide the necessary structural support.
Brabus says particular attention was given to weather sealing, reliability, and noise insulation. Every completed vehicle even spends over 10 hours undergoing continuous water testing inside a climate chamber before delivery.
Naturally, Brabus didn’t stop at chopping off the roof. There’s exposed carbon fiber almost everywhere, widened fenders, and gigantic 24-inch Monoblock II EVO wheels, while the RideControl coilover suspension can lower the G63 by up to 45 mm.
900 HP In A Roofless G-Class
Brabus takes the AMG’s twin-turbo V8 and increases its displacement from 4.0 to 4.5 liters. The extensive rebuild includes forged pistons, new connecting rods, a billet crankshaft, and larger turbochargers producing up to 1.4 bar of boost.
The result is 900 hp and 922 lb-ft of torque, although torque is electronically restricted to 774 lb-ft in the vehicle. Brabus claims the giant convertible can hit 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds.
Top speed is electronically limited to 149 mph to protect the tires. There’s also a valve-controlled exhaust with a loud Sport setting and a considerably friendlier “Coming Home” mode for those moments when waking the entire neighborhood isn’t part of the plan.
Only 10 Will Be Built
Inside, Brabus covers virtually everything in black leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber, contrasted by bright Rocket Red trim, stitching, and piping. Even the rear doors receive special hinges allowing them to swing open 90 degrees.
Each example also comes with a blockchain-based Digital Product Passport documenting its authenticity, ownership, and specifications. Apparently a 900-hp convertible G-Class needed a digital birth certificate, too.
Brabus says production of the 900 Rocket Edition Cabrio will be limited to just 10 vehicles worldwide. Sensible it isn’t, but when you’re building a 900-hp, four-door G-Class convertible on 24-inch wheels, sensible probably wasn’t on the agenda anyway.
