Porsche has reached an important milestone in its effort to create a closed-loop system for high-voltage batteries, meaning old Porsche EV batteries could eventually find their way back into new Porsches.
Working with German battery recycling specialist Cylib and other partners, Porsche has produced battery cells using cathode active material made entirely from recycled raw materials. Those materials were recovered from Porsche’s own end-of-life high-voltage batteries.
The list includes some of the most important ingredients in modern EV batteries: lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. Rather than supplementing newly mined material, Porsche says the recycled material completely replaced primary raw materials in the cathode active material used for the pilot cells.
Those cells aren’t headed into customer cars yet. Porsche is currently putting them through extensive operational testing, with the results helping determine whether the technology can eventually make the jump into series-production batteries.
Old Porsche Batteries Could Become New Ones
The process starts with end-of-life high-voltage batteries, which are discharged and dismantled before being mechanically shredded. The material is then processed into what’s known as black mass, from which valuable battery ingredients can be recovered.
Porsche and its partners then process those recovered materials into new cathode active material. The goal is essentially to create a loop where valuable ingredients from worn-out Porsche batteries can eventually return to new high-performance cells rather than being discarded.
Initial testing has already demonstrated what Porsche calls the technical feasibility of the process. The next challenge is proving that recycled materials can consistently satisfy the company’s requirements for quality, value, and performance.
Porsche Is Already Recycling Used Batteries
This isn’t limited to a laboratory experiment. Since May 2026, end-of-life high-voltage batteries collected from Porsche Centers across Germany have been recycled by Cylib using a water-based process.
The recovered raw materials are tracked through a dedicated material account. Porsche says they will become available to it and selected partner companies for battery-cell production beginning in 2028.
Recycling locally could also reduce Porsche’s dependence on global supplies of critical battery materials. Lithium, nickel, and cobalt don’t suddenly stop being valuable simply because the battery they originally inhabited has reached the end of its useful life.
Don’t Expect A Recycled-Battery Taycan Just Yet
Porsche is already using the newly manufactured cells in its pilot program, but there’s an important distinction between successful testing and production cars. The company hasn’t announced a date for putting batteries containing these recycled materials into customer vehicles.
Instead, Porsche says findings from the project will provide the basis for a potential future series-production application. It also says battery materials recycled in Europe could eventually be used in high-voltage batteries for Porsche vehicles.
That makes 2028 an important milestone for material availability, rather than a confirmed launch date for a recycled-battery Porsche. Still, if the testing delivers the quality and performance Porsche requires, yesterday’s EV battery could eventually help power tomorrow’s Porsche.
