The heavy-duty diesel wars have officially entered their wildlife phase. General Motors has confirmed an enormous new Duramax V8, and its nickname makes the intended target painfully obvious.
Meet the Mongoose, an all-new 8.3-liter turbo-diesel V8 destined for GM’s refreshed 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. Beyond its substantial displacement, GM is keeping most of the important numbers under wraps for now.
The name isn’t random, either. Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 is known as the Scorpion, so GM introduced its new engine with a teaser showing a mongoose doing what mongooses tend to do when confronted by scorpions.
GM isn’t being subtle about its ambitions, either. The company calls the Mongoose “built to dominate” and promises that Chevrolet and GMC will reveal additional details soon.
8.3 Liters Is A Lot Of Duramax
GM’s current Duramax displaces 6.6 liters, making the jump to 8.3 liters a substantial 1.7-liter increase. That’s roughly 26% more displacement, and it gives GM plenty of room to chase some very serious output figures.
The current 6.6-liter Duramax produces 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke currently raises the stakes to 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft, while Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins makes 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft.
GM hasn’t disclosed horsepower or torque figures for the Mongoose, so whether it will actually beat Ford remains unknown. After introducing it with a video of a mongoose defeating a scorpion, however, anything short of seriously challenging Ford’s numbers would make for an awkward follow-up.
GM Isn’t Saying Much Yet
The Mongoose will power the refreshed 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD, but GM hasn’t announced towing capacities, transmission details, pricing, or which configurations will receive the engine.
It’s also not known whether the 8.3-liter engine will replace the familiar 6.6-liter Duramax completely or sit above it as a higher-output option, but GM describes the new V8 as the heart of its refreshed HD trucks.
Ford Is Clearly The Target
Automakers usually introduce new engines by talking about efficiency, durability, and engineering improvements. GM decided an animal fight was a better approach.
The strategy makes sense considering how competitive the heavy-duty pickup segment has become. Ford currently holds the stronger headline diesel figures, giving the Mongoose an obvious benchmark when its specifications finally arrive.
At the moment, GM has only confirmed that the new engine has eight cylinders, 8.3 liters, turbocharging, and a cool nickname. The Mongoose has arrived; now we need to find out whether it actually has the bite to match the marketing.
