Drivers topped 70 mph on Salinas city streets Saturday night while police and California Highway Patrol officers were running a coordinated enforcement detail aimed at street racing, reckless driving, and sideshow activity.
The Salinas Police Department said officers made 89 traffic stops during the operation across Salinas and Monterey County.
Those stops produced 59 citations and five DUI arrests. Police also reported one reckless-driving arrest, one arrest involving possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, two vehicle impounds, and five State Referee referrals.
The operation was designed to get ahead of dangerous driving rather than wait for a sideshow to take over an intersection or parking lot. Salinas Police said the department and CHP focused on excessive speed, street racing, reckless driving, and other dangerous behavior throughout the evening.
Before It Starts

Salinas Police described visibility as part of the strategy. The department said the purpose was not simply to respond after a sideshow began, but to address dangerous driving before it escalated.
Saturday’s numbers show how broad that approach became. The detail was not limited to a single street-racing offense or gathering. DUI arrests, speeding stops, vehicle referrals, impounds, and the separate drug arrest all came out of the same enforcement period.
It also was not the first coordinated sideshow operation involving Salinas Police and CHP.
Same Playbook
On May 2, Salinas Police joined the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, and Monterey Area CHP for a multi-agency sideshow operation after a large gathering formed near East Boronda Road.
More than 100 vehicles were present at one point, according to the department. Roughly 40 sworn personnel participated, including CHP Coastal Division Air Operations.
That operation resulted in 80 citations, approximately 65 for misdemeanor violations, 4 vehicle tows, and 6 State Referee referrals for illegal modifications.
The agencies said at the time that they had been combining resources specifically to reduce sideshow activity in Monterey County.
Saturday’s detail took a more preventive form. Rather than describing officers responding to a large active gathering, Salinas Police emphasized traffic enforcement throughout the area and stopping dangerous driving before it developed further.
Bigger Numbers
That strategy also fits a broader CHP enforcement program operating around California.
The California Office of Traffic Safety said CHP’s Sideshow, Takeover, Racing, Education and Enforcement Taskforce, known as STREET, conducted 62 specialized operations during its 2025 grant work.
Those operations targeted street racing and sideshows along with unsafe speed, impaired driving, improper turns, and unsafe lane changes. They produced 2,164 enforcement stops, 1,237 citations, and 278 arrests.
The program also trained 883 CHP and allied-agency personnel to identify modified vehicles and enforce laws involving illegal and unsafe driving operations.
Salinas Police said its latest detail produced two impounds in addition to the citations and arrests. Five vehicles were also referred to the State Referee.
The department said the goal of the coordinated enforcement is to stay visible and intervene before dangerous driving turns into something larger.
