Two people were killed and six others were taken to hospitals after a vehicle collided with a Metro bus in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash was reported at 5:03 p.m. in the 20900 block of West Nordhoff Street in Chatsworth, near De Soto Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters arriving at the scene found numerous injured people and began assessing the bus passengers while working to free people who were trapped.
The department later put the total number of patients at eight. Six were transported to local hospitals, while two were pronounced dead.
Officials had not publicly identified the two people who died or established whether they had been aboard the bus, in the other vehicle, or outside the vehicles when the collision occurred. The circumstances leading to the crash also remained unclear Tuesday evening.
Inside The Bus
KTLA reported that aerial footage showed an SUV lodged in the left side of the Metro bus as firefighters treated injured people and worked to free those trapped inside.
Crews eventually pulled the vehicle away from the bus, exposing a large hole in its side.
The initial LAFD alert described the other vehicle only as a passenger vehicle. The department did not identify its driver or say which vehicle entered the intersection first.
NBC Los Angeles likewise reported that officials had not determined what led to the collision.
Eight Patients
LAFD’s update said six of the eight patients were transported to local hospitals. The department did not provide their conditions in the public incident notice.
The two other patients were determined to be dead.
The department also notified the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team following the crash.
Roads Closed
LAFD said in its evening update that the intersection of Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue would remain shut down for an unknown amount of time.
The department’s incident record also listed a corresponding Los Angeles Police Department incident number as the response continued.
