Tesla Is Rolling Out FSD V14.3.9 With Automatic Collision Evasion Feature

Automatic emergency braking has been intervening when drivers fail to react for years, but Tesla is taking that concept much further. Its latest Full Self-Driving update can potentially steer the vehicle around an impending crash rather than relying solely on the brakes.

The unusual part is that FSD doesn’t necessarily need to be actively driving the car when this happens. Under certain circumstances, Tesla says the system can activate on the driver’s behalf and temporarily take control while the vehicle is being driven manually.

The Tesla AI account on X announced the capability as part of FSD (Supervised) V14.3.9, which is now rolling out. The company describes the new functionality as an additional active-safety layer intended for situations where a collision appears imminent, and Automatic Emergency Braking may not be sufficient.

It’s an ambitious approach to collision avoidance, although giving software permission to steer a manually driven vehicle inevitably raises questions about intervention, driver control, and how the system behaves when its assessment of a situation differs from the human behind the wheel.

FSD Can Activate Itself


According to the original Tesla AI announcement, FSD V14.3.9 can automatically engage when it detects an imminent collision and determines that braking alone may not prevent it. The system can use steering alongside braking and acceleration to attempt an evasive maneuver.

That could involve navigating around an obstacle, changing lanes, or using available space to avoid the collision rather than simply reducing impact speed. Tesla says FSD can subsequently continue driving after the immediate danger has passed.

The company also says FSD may activate if it detects that a driver is heavily distracted or has accidentally disengaged the system. Despite those interventions, FSD remains a supervised driver-assistance system, meaning the driver remains responsible for the vehicle.

There Are Limits To When It Works

Motor1 reports that the V14.3.9 release notes indicate Automatic Collision Evasion operates only under specific conditions. One scenario involves an imminent frontal collision on a controlled-access highway where braking alone is insufficient and vulnerable road users aren’t present.

The system operates below 85 mph and won’t intervene when the road is detected as wet or slippery. During an intervention, pressing the accelerator has no effect, while braking can add deceleration without immediately cancelling the maneuver.

A driver who wants to override the automated steering can do so by applying firm counter-steering input. Tesla has not presented the feature as permission for drivers to become less attentive.

The rollout also has a notable limitation. Automatic Collision Evasion is reportedly restricted to North American AI4/HW4 vehicles running the full FSD V14.3.9 software, rather than older HW3 cars receiving the lighter V14 software branch.

That distinction could prove controversial because FSD has historically been sold as an optional software package. Some owners of older hardware may therefore have purchased FSD without gaining access to this particular capability.

Automatic Collision Evasion could potentially prevent serious crashes when braking simply isn’t enough. Giving an automated system the ability to initiate an evasive steering maneuver during manual driving, however, makes V14.3.9 one of Tesla’s most consequential FSD updates yet.
