A Maryland woman returned to her vehicle in July 2022 only to find someone already sitting behind the wheel, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police website What followed left her significantly injured, her vehicle crashed in Washington, D.C., and investigators working a case that would not result in an arrest for more than four years.
Police now say 23-year-old Daymonte Antonyio Jones of District Heights was the person responsible for the carjacking. Jones was arrested on August 31, 2026, and charged in connection with the incident.
The original carjacking happened at approximately 7:45 p.m. on July 5, 2022, in the 8700 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. Third District officers responded after receiving a report of a carjacking at the location.
Investigators said the victim returned to her vehicle and discovered a suspect sitting in the driver’s seat. An altercation followed, during which police say the woman was dragged along the roadway and suffered significant injuries.

The suspect managed to leave in the woman’s vehicle following the confrontation, according to police. A brief pursuit carried into Washington, D.C., where the stolen vehicle eventually crashed.
Montgomery County Major Crimes detectives continued investigating and ultimately identified Jones as the suspect, police said. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging him with carjacking, although the department did not explain in its September 9 release what evidence eventually led investigators to Jones.
Jones was arrested on August 31, more than four years after the original carjacking. Montgomery County Police said he was being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center when the department announced the arrest.
Custody Records Show Jones Was Transferred
We also checked Jones’ information against available custody records and found a matching record listing an August 31 booking through the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections. That record lists his custody status as “Transferred” as of September 3, with the custody detail specifying “Another Facility.”
The transfer information is consistent with Montgomery County Police stating that Jones was being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center, rather than suggesting he had been released from custody. The available record also links Jones to an open criminal case through the Montgomery County District Court in Rockville.
Police say Jones is charged with carjacking in connection with the 2022 incident, and the court record remains open. The charge is an accusation, and Jones is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
