A Florida man who was recently released from prison after killing a swan is back behind bars, this time accused of smashing an Arby’s window with a metal pipe and throwing it at passing cars.
Adonis Leyva, 34, was arrested Monday in Orlando after police say he damaged an Arby’s on East Colonial Drive, according to the New York Post. Leyva allegedly smashed a window while a female employee was inside.
Leyva then allegedly walked next door and struck a Dunkin’ Donuts sign with the pipe. Police say that Leyva was also seen at a Wawa where he walked into the street and threw his pipe at passing cars.
The rampage occurred only a month after Leyva was released from prison, where he had been serving a sentence related to the killing of a swan at Lake Eola, adding another bizarre incident to his record.
He Was Hungry for Swan
Last year, Leyva was arrested for killing a swan. During that incident, witnesses reportedly saw him carrying the dead bird. He served just under a year for that and was released less than a month ago.
Leyva allegedly said to a witness that he killed the bird for “food.” Officers would eventually put him in handcuffs, and Leyva further explained, “I was hungry, so I hunted.”
Leyva ultimately pleaded no contest to animal cruelty charges. He was found mentally competent to stand trial.
The Charges
The following morning, employees at a nearby PNC Bank reportedly discovered that an ATM had also been damaged. Surveillance footage allegedly connected the ATM damage to the same pipe. That resulted in another felony charge for Leyva.
According to jail records cited by the New York Post, Leyva is facing two counts of criminal mischief, both third-degree felonies. He is being held on a $6,000 bond.
Residents Were Shocked
The incident drew concern from people in the area. Residents said the behavior made the situation feel unsafe.
Elizabeth Guerrero, a resident, told News 6 that she did not believe someone behaving this way should be free. She said the situation made the area feel unsafe for other people. Kim Long, another resident, stated how she hopes that Leyva will get the help he needs this time.
Online reactions were entirely different. Most commenters focused on the absurdity of that rampage. Many made jokes about how he went on the rampage because the Arby’s didn’t have swan meat. While another put a spin on the catchphrase of Arby’s, saying, “We have the beaks.”
