What started as a quick stop at a gas station turned into an unexpected rescue mission for one Florida man after he found eight abandoned puppies hanging around a dumpster. Instead of leaving them behind, he brought the puppies along with him on his travels.
Brendon Leslie was driving to Mississippi when he made a last-minute stop at a gas station in northern Alabama. That’s where he spotted the puppies, all of whom were less than two months old.
“I thought that was crazy that these eight puppies were chilling at a dumpster at a gas station,” Leslie told WPBF. As a dog lover, Leslie decided that he had to save the puppies.
Leslie took the pups to a veterinarian in Tupelo, Mississippi, where they received checkups and vaccinations. They were all healthy and happy. From there, his trip continued south, with eight unexpected passengers joining him for the drive to his home in Cape Coral, Florida.
He Documented the Journey
Leslie recorded the whole journey and posted updates to his social media page, keeping everyone up to date about their health and adoption status.
Seven of the eight puppies have now found their forever homes. The eighth one is staying with Leslie.
One Puppy Decides He’s Staying
There was one puppy Leslie couldn’t send off to another family. The last remaining puppy, named Elvis, ended up becoming the newest member of Leslie’s own dog pack.
That means all eight puppies found somewhere to call home, although Elvis won’t be going very far. Leslie continued sharing updates about the puppies online, hoping the story will encourage other people to help animals when they come across them.

For Leslie, the journey wasn’t just about rescuing and finding homes for eight puppies. Leslie hopes documenting the experience encourages people to do good things simply because they can, rather than looking for something in return.
“I hope that this whole entire journey that I’ve been documenting and sharing with social media inspires others to do good deeds just because, and not make a profit off of it,” Leslie said.
He’s also using the attention surrounding the puppies to encourage people to advocate for animals and push lawmakers for stronger animal cruelty laws.
It was a life-changing event for all involved. Eight puppies that were once sitting beside a dumpster now have homes, with one of them deciding to stay with the man who saved them.
