CarNewsChina reports that MG has launched a new sedan in China that combines some surprisingly premium specifications with a starting price firmly in budget-car territory. Called the MG 07, the new model made its official market debut at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show with both fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Prices start at 108,900 yuan, equivalent to roughly $16,000, while the most expensive version costs 159,900 yuan, or around $23,500. That puts even the flagship MG 07 at a fraction of the price of many premium electric sedans.
The styling is likely to generate plenty of discussion as well. Its low, streamlined profile, frameless doors, full-width rear lighting, and overall proportions bring the Porsche Taycan to mind, particularly when viewed from the side and rear.
There are important differences, of course, and MG is not positioning the 07 as a direct Porsche rival. Still, the visual similarities make an already intriguing car even harder to ignore when its price, equipment, and claimed driving range are taken into account.
EV And Plug-In Hybrid Versions Are Available

MG offers seven configurations of the 07, including two plug-in hybrids and five battery-electric versions. The least expensive EV starts at 116,900 yuan, or approximately $17,200, while the flagship electric model reaches 159,900 yuan, approximately $23,500.
The electric MG 07 uses an 800-volt architecture and a front-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor. Depending on specification, output is either 176 kW (236 hp) or 235 kW (315 hp), with maximum torque figures of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft), respectively.
Battery choices are 67 kWh and 91 kWh, and depending on the version, MG quotes CLTC driving ranges of 610 km (379 miles), 650 km (404 miles), or as much as 845 km (525 miles).
Interestingly, the two 610-km variants use semi-solid batteries supplied by Qingtao, while the other EV and hybrid versions use CATL batteries. MG says deliveries of the 650-km models will begin at the end of August, with the long-range 845-km versions following in October.
The PHEV Can Travel A Claimed 1,745 KM
Buyers who are not ready to rely entirely on charging infrastructure can choose the MG 07 plug-in hybrid. It combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 82 kW (110 hp) with a 152-kW (204-hp) electric drive motor.
The PHEV offers a claimed 245 km (152 miles) of electric-only range under China’s optimistic CLTC testing cycle. With a full battery and fuel tank, MG claims the sedan can cover as much as 1,745 km (1,084 miles).
That enormous figure needs to be viewed in the context of the CLTC test procedure and should not be compared directly with EPA range estimates. Even so, 245 km of claimed electric range gives the plug-in version considerably more battery capability than many traditional PHEVs.
Plenty Of Taycan Flavor On The Outside

At 4,886 mm (192.4 inches) long, 1,900 mm (74.8 inches) wide and 1,478 mm (58.2 inches) tall, the MG 07 is a substantial midsize sedan. Its 2,825-mm (111.2-inch) wheelbase contributes to the long, planted proportions that invite those Taycan comparisons.
MG adds frameless doors, semi-hidden door handles, two-tone wheels, and yellow brake calipers. Around back is a full-width taillight and a five-position electrically adjustable spoiler, while a 168-liter front trunk provides additional cargo space.
The front end has considerably more of its own personality, using distinctive lighting and a clamshell hood. Six exterior colors are available, including Morello Purple, Oxford Blue, Milia Pink, and California Blue.
The Interior Doesn’t Look Like A $16,000 Car
The price becomes even harder to reconcile with the equipment inside. A 15.6-inch floating infotainment display dominates the dashboard, accompanied by a digital instrument cluster and Qualcomm’s 8295P cockpit processor.
Available equipment includes a heated and ventilated driver’s seat, a so-called “Queen” zero-gravity front passenger seat, rear-seat heating and ventilation, an electrochromic panoramic roof and a 21-speaker audio system. MG also lists mCDC active electromagnetic suspension among the car’s available technology.
LiDAR-equipped versions use driver-assistance technology incorporating Momenta’s R7 enhanced world model and MG’s X7 chip. That further illustrates just how aggressively Chinese manufacturers are packaging advanced hardware into comparatively inexpensive cars.
Another Reminder Of China’s Brutal EV Competition

The MG 07 is not a $16,000 Porsche Taycan in any meaningful engineering sense, and judging the two solely because their styling shares some familiar themes would miss the point. Porsche’s performance, chassis development, brand positioning, and global pricing put the Taycan in an entirely different category.
What makes the MG interesting is how much car SAIC is offering for the money in China. Even ignoring the Taycan resemblance, a large sedan with an 800-volt EV architecture, up to 315 hp, extensive cabin technology, and a claimed 525-mile CLTC range for less than $24,000 at the top end is an aggressive proposition.
