A bright red sports car that looked like it had rolled straight out of the iconic movie Cars drew plenty of attention in Carlsbad, but not for the reason its driver may have wanted.
Carlsbad police said officers stopped the Lightning McQueen lookalike after clocking it at 92 mph in a 55 mph zone on El Camino Real. The department turned the traffic stop into a humorous road safety message, joking that the car had taken a wrong turn out of Radiator Springs while trying to qualify for the Piston Cup.
The playful post quickly attracted attention online, where residents mixed jokes about the distinctive vehicle with more serious concerns about speeding on local roads.
Police Put Speed Into Perspective
While the Cars references gave the post a lighthearted tone, police emphasized the danger created by traveling nearly 40 mph over the posted speed limit.
City of Carlsbad Police Department calculated the stopping distance for a vehicle traveling at 92 mph, noting that a car at that speed covers roughly 135 feet every second. Police said a driver could travel around 200 feet before reacting and beginning to brake, while coming to a complete stop could require approximately 600 feet, which is longer than two football fields.
The department warned that speeding continues to play a significant role in serious and fatal crashes, so it left a message ending with another reference to the Disney Pixar franchise.
Doc Hudson taught Lightning McQueen that driving is about more than being the fastest. Police said the real goal is to get home safely and prevent injuries.
Residents Praise the Creative Safety Message
Many social media users applauded the department for finding a humorous way to deliver a serious warning.
One commenter described the post as a “cute advertisement for safety,” while others praised whoever wrote it for making the public safety message entertaining.
The jokes continued in the comments. One person called the incident “Supra duper speed,” while another asked, “Where’s Mater?” A different commenter suggested the department recreate the post with a DeLorean traveling 88 mph, referencing the iconic Back to the Future trilogy.
Humor Aside, Drivers Are Asked To Slow Down
The unusual-looking sports car may have helped the traffic stop attract attention, but the department’s central message was straightforward and equally important.
High-performance cars can accelerate quickly, but public streets are not racetracks. At extreme speeds, drivers have less time to react to pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signals and unexpected movements by other vehicles.
Several commenters also pointed out that children riding e-bikes share many of the same streets with motorists, adding another reason for drivers to remain alert at all times.
For Carlsbad police, the lesson from the Lightning McQueen-inspired encounter was simple. No Piston Cup is waiting at the end of El Camino Real. Make sure to slow down and make getting home safely the finish line.
