Finished in striking Acapulco Blue, this Mustang Fastback has undergone a comprehensive rotisserie restoration that extends from its bodywork and interior to the underside. It has also earned national recognition, with Vanguard describing the car as a multiple award winner.
The headline attraction is naturally the 428-cubic-inch Super Cobra Jet V8, paired here with a C6 automatic transmission. A functional Shaker hood scoop completes the classic muscle-car appearance, while Magnum 500 wheels provide a suitably period-correct finishing touch.
Buying this level of Mustang doesn’t come cheaply, however. Vanguard Motor Sales has listed the car for $199,900, putting it firmly into serious collector territory.
The 428 Super Cobra Jet Is the Star
Under the hood sits the big-block 428 Super Cobra Jet, complete with several details associated with the Drag Pack package. Vanguard points to the counterweight behind the harmonic balancer, sometimes nicknamed the “hatchet,” as one identifying feature of the SCJ setup.
The engine bay also retains an oil cooler, another important Drag Pack component, along with a smog pump and a period-correct carburetor. The distributor appears stock at first glance, although Vanguard says it has been upgraded with electronic ignition rather than using the original points and condenser arrangement.
Everything surrounding the engine has been restored to an exceptionally high standard. The underside of the hood, inner fenders, brackets, hardware, and other components have all received considerable attention, giving the engine compartment a factory-inspired appearance.
Its Original 4.30 Gearing Has Been Changed
This Mustang originally came with a Ford 9-inch rear axle fitted with a steep 4.30:1 gear ratio, exactly the sort of setup expected from a Drag Pack car. That gearing would have favored hard acceleration but made sustained highway driving considerably busier.
A previous owner replaced the 4.30 gears with a more relaxed 3.50:1 setup. Vanguard demonstrated the Mustang cruising comfortably at around 55 mph, suggesting the change has made it substantially friendlier for anyone who intends to actually drive it.
Power continues to flow through the C6 automatic, while the chassis retains drum brakes at both ends. Vanguard says its technicians inspect the braking and suspension components before delivery, with the visible bushings, ball joints, control arms, and related hardware appearing fresh after the restoration.
The Restoration Goes Far Beyond the Paint
Acapulco Blue is an especially flattering color on the 1969 Mustang’s fastback body, and this example appears to have received plenty of attention to panel alignment and exterior detailing. The chrome and stainless trim have also been restored, while the body rides on new Magnum 500 wheels.
The same attention continues underneath, where the floors, frame sections, suspension components, fuel tank, and exhaust system present nearly as cleanly as the exterior. Several components have been finished to replicate the appearance of bare metal while providing a surface that should be easier to maintain.
There are a few minor signs that the car has actually touched pavement, including small stone chips low on the body. Given the quality of the overall restoration, those imperfections appear relatively insignificant.
The Interior Keeps Things Period Correct
Inside, the Mustang features black bucket seats and a largely factory-style presentation. The dashboard, gauge faces, lenses, steering wheel, carpeting, door panels, and trim all appear to have been carefully restored.
The C6 automatic is operated through a console-mounted shifter, while the car retains front and rear seat belts along with its shoulder belts. Even the trunk has received the restoration treatment, complete with a spare tire, lug wrench, and an original-style battery.
The result is an interior that complements the exterior rather than trying to modernize a late-1960s muscle car. For a Mustang with this level of collectibility, keeping the presentation close to its period character makes plenty of sense.
A Serious Mustang With a Serious Price
At $199,900, this R-Code Mustang is clearly aimed at collectors looking for something significantly rarer than the average restored 1969 Fastback. The combination of a 428 Super Cobra Jet, Drag Pack equipment, desirable color, and award-winning restoration gives it plenty of credentials.
The change from the original 4.30 gearing to 3.50s means it isn’t preserved exactly as originally configured, though that modification also makes it much easier to enjoy away from a drag strip. The electronic ignition upgrade similarly favors usability without dramatically altering the car’s appearance.
