When California Highway Patrol shares photos of a car stopped at extreme speeds, the vehicle involved is often something like a McLaren, Lamborghini, Porsche, or Corvette rather than a lightweight Lotus Elise.
That’s part of what makes a recent CHP post stand out.
According to the CHP – Temecula, officers stopped a Lotus Elise traveling 140 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 15. CHP said the driver was arrested for reckless driving and the vehicle was towed.
The British sports car is well known among enthusiasts for its sharp handling and track-focused personality rather than outright top-end speed. As a result, much of the discussion online has focused less on the alleged violation itself and more on the little Lotus at the center of it.
CHP Says the Lotus Was Clocked at 140 MPH
CHP said the driver was traveling at twice the posted 70 mph speed limit on Interstate 15 when officers made the stop.
The driver was arrested for reckless driving under California Vehicle Code 23103, and the Elise was towed.
CHP also used the post to point out how dramatically stopping distance and kinetic energy increase at higher speeds, especially on a busy freeway like I-15.
Why the Lotus Caught People’s Attention
Part of the reason the post took off is that the Elise is not the kind of car most people expect to see attached to a 140 mph CHP stop. The lightweight Lotus is known more for its handling than outright top speed. That unusual pairing was enough to make some readers question the post itself because, apparently, it is no longer the internet unless somebody accuses something unfamiliar of being AI-generated.
In this case, though, we have no reason to doubt CHP’s account. While CHP did not identify the exact Elise model involved or say whether it had been modified, several Elise variants were capable of speeds in that range from the factory.
It’s also worth noting that CHP did not release the driver’s identity, which is fairly standard for these types of social media posts. Unlike a traditional media release focused on a specific arrest, CHP’s posts are often designed as public safety messages that use a real-world incident to highlight dangerous driving behavior and encourage safer choices behind the wheel.

Still others pointed out that different Elise versions had very different capabilities. One commenter noted that top speeds varied by model, while another suggested a tuned and supercharged 2ZZ-powered Elise could get into that range without much trouble.
Since this happened on Interstate 15, plenty of people made the inevitable Vegas jokes. One commenter wrote that the driver was probably bored on the stretch between Baker and Primm, while another joked that the route to Las Vegas practically invites people to speed.
The Trip Ended on a Tow Truck
Whatever was under the rear bodywork, CHP says the drive ended shortly after officers recorded the 140 mph speed.
