Two men in Washington County, Georgia, are facing multiple charges after they allegedly attempted to smuggle drugs and phones into a local prison via a drone. They were caught after deputies observed them travelling in a “suspicious vehicle,” which inevitably led to a traffic stop.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) in Georgia, the incident occurred on Saturday, August 1. At around 10:15 p.m., deputies were contacted by Washington State Prison staff over a troubling sight.
Prison staff members had observed what appeared to be a drone flying on top of the prison grounds. Then, a package was dropped, suspected to be contraband.
WCSO deputies, as a result, responded to the prison promptly. While surveying the surrounding area, they came across the alleged culprits.
Suspects Arrested
The drone search ended with deputies noticing what they deemed a “suspicious vehicle.” A traffic stop was then conducted.
During the traffic stop, the WCSO said that deputies found evidence of the suspected prison contraband drop. The nature of the evidence was not specified by the sheriff’s office.
Back at the prison, correctional officers came across the “CARE package.” It is safe to say that its content was not humanitarian at all.
Drone Bag Contents
Officers located the suspected contraband within the prison grounds. It was turned over to the WCSO as evidence.
While the investigation still continues, the sheriff’s office did list a variety of items contained in the dropped bag. Drug-wise, these included 5.15 pounds of marijuana, 14.65 pounds of tobacco, 151.5 grams of ecstasy, and 13.7 grams of hydrocodone.
Other more “conventional,” but still illegal prison items were recovered. The WCSO found chargers, earbuds, lights, and “other miscellaneous items.”
A photo of the contraband shared by the sheriff’s office showed the items dropped by the drone. The cell phones and other non-drug items are on the table, while the drugs are seen stashed in vacuum-sealed bags.
Charges
Two suspects were arrested as a result of the investigation. These are 22-year-old Kymani McLaren and 22-year-old Jovani Morris, both Lithonia residents.
Both men are facing a multitude of charges, including operating unmanned aircraft, items prohibited by inmates, possession of tools in certain crimes, trading with inmates (tobacco), trading with inmates (cell phones), trading with inmates (marijuana), trading with inmates (MDMA), trading with inmates (oxycodone hydrochloride), possession with intent (marijuana), possession with intent (schedule II drug), and trafficking MDMA.
