A routine oil change turned into a frustrating ordeal for one Toyota owner after she claimed a dealership misplaced her car keys. In a TikTok video that has attracted hundreds of thousands of views, the customer said what should have been a quick service appointment ended with hours of waiting and no maintenance completed.
The incident was first shared by TikTok creator @xoxoymv, who documented the experience at what she identified as Freeway Toyota in Hanford, California.
According to her video, dealership staff eventually informed her they could not locate her keys and began searching through vehicles in an attempt to find them.
While employees apologized and offered to replace the missing key if it wasn’t recovered, the customer said the situation became increasingly frustrating. She ultimately left the dealership without having her oil change completed.
Dealership Staff Admitted They Couldn’t Find The Keys
@xoxoymv Horrible experience! And to think I wanted to trade in my suv and buy a bigger one there. Yeahhh big no lol.. #dealership #toyota #freewaytoyota #hanford #rav4 ♬ Oh My Gawd Man… – uhhh(😎) 🔥
In the video, an employee can be heard telling the customer that staff members were unable to locate her keys. The employee apologized and explained they would continue searching, adding that the dealership would replace the key if it ultimately couldn’t be found.
The dealership also offered her a loaner vehicle while the search continued. However, the customer explained that many of her personal belongings, including her baby’s car seat and her computer, remained inside her SUV, making the offer less helpful than it might have otherwise been.
Text overlaid on the TikTok claims the entire ordeal lasted roughly two hours. In the caption, the creator described the experience as “horrible” and said it changed her mind about purchasing another vehicle from the same dealership.
Replacing A Lost Key Is Usually Possible
Although losing a customer’s key is uncommon, dealerships generally have the equipment needed to resolve the problem. If a spare key is available, technicians can typically program a replacement key and reconfigure the vehicle so the missing key will no longer start or unlock it.
That process also provides an important security benefit. Once the vehicle’s immobilizer system is reprogrammed, anyone who later finds the original missing key should no longer be able to use it to access or drive the vehicle.
Depending on the make and model, cutting and programming replacement smart keys can be completed relatively quickly, though the exact process varies between manufacturers. Since the dealership would generally be responsible if it misplaced a customer’s key, many drivers would reasonably expect those replacement costs to be covered.
Commenters Questioned How The Situation Was Handled

The video sparked plenty of discussion online, with many viewers questioning why the customer remained at the dealership while employees searched for the missing key. Some suggested staff could have immediately created a replacement key or at least provided a temporary mechanical key so she could retrieve her belongings.
Others claiming to work at dealerships said replacing and programming keys is often straightforward when the proper equipment is available. Several commenters also alleged they had experienced similar issues at the same dealership, although those claims have not been independently verified.
A Reminder To Keep A Spare Key
While situations like this appear to be relatively rare, they highlight the importance of having a spare key stored somewhere safe. Having an extra key available can make an unexpected situation much easier to resolve, whether the original is lost by a dealership or simply misplaced by the owner.
As of publication, neither the TikTok creator nor the dealership had publicly shared any follow-up explaining whether the missing keys were eventually recovered or replaced. The dealership’s side of the incident has not been publicly confirmed beyond what is shown in the viral video.
