Routine traffic stops can change in an instant, but it’s not every day they end with a bomb squad shutting down an entire roadway. It’s a good thing that some police stations and sheriff’s offices have dogs equipped with the knowledge to detect them.
According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducting a traffic stop on Freedom Boulevard uncovered much more than they expected after a K9 alerted to a vehicle. What began as a standard stop quickly escalated into an arrest, a road closure, and the safe detonation of a pipe bomb.
Deputies said the traffic stop took place at approximately 4:00 pm near the 2600 block of Freedom Boulevard. During the stop, one of the sheriff’s K9s alerted to the vehicle, giving deputies probable cause to search.
According to authorities, the suspect attempted to flee before the search could be completed. After what deputies described as a brief struggle, the individual was taken into custody without any further incident.
Deputies Say the Vehicle Contained a Loaded Gun, Drugs, and a Pipe Bomb
Once the suspect was detained, deputies searched the vehicle and reportedly found several dangerous items.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said deputies recovered a loaded firearm, suspected narcotics, and what appeared to be a pipe bomb.
Because of the potential danger posed by the explosive device, authorities immediately closed Freedom Boulevard between Bowker Road and Corralitos Road while the Santa Cruz County Bomb Team responded to the scene.
Officials later confirmed the device was safely detonated, allowing crews to begin reopening the roadway. Freedom Boulevard has since been reopened.
Commenters Had One Clear Favorite in the Whole Story: The K9
Many commenters were quick to praise the K9 that alerted deputies to the vehicle, with one person joking, “Give that K9 ANYTHING IT WANTS.” Another added that the dog deserved “a nice big steak as reward,” while others credited the animal with potentially saving lives.
Several people also couldn’t stop wondering what the suspect intended to do with a loaded gun and a pipe bomb. One commenter wrote, “Makes me wonder, with a loaded gun and a pipe bomb, what was their intended target? I’m guessing that traffic stop just saved some lives.”
Of course, there were also plenty of lighter-hearted reactions. Some were baffled that someone would simply be “driving around with a pipe bomb,” while others joked about the bomb disposal robot, with one person asking, “Bro how do you draw the short straw bad enough to have the robot behind YOU?”
